The link below is to a transcription of the 1755 Tyrrell County Tax
List. The original document is preserved at the State of North
Carolina Archives in Raleigh. The handwriting in this document
was very legible. Consequently, there were few problems
encountered in transcribing the document. Names were listed
alphabetically by the first letter of surnames on this tax list,
so no index was necessary. Names do not appear in the exact
sequence in which they appear on the original, however.
In those few instances where there was doubt about a transcription, notes
have been included in the text. A question mark within brackets, (?),
indicates that there was difficulty in reading the original text. In
these instances, the reader may want to consult the original
document. In the original a double "s" was often used where
a single "s" would be the normal spelling. These have been
transcribed as a double "s" regardless.
The right column giving the number of blacks on one page was
cut off in the microfilm of the tax list. All taxable persons
with this being the case have entries of "?" in the black column.
