Following is a transcription of the 1786 Tyrrell County Tax
List. The original document is preserved at the State of North
Carolina Archives in Raleigh. Since the 1786 North Carolina Census
for Tyrrell County is missing listings for Alligator and Gum Neck
districts, this tax list will serve to fill that gap.
The handwriting in this document was very legible. Consequently, there
were few problems encountered in transcribing the document. However,
in those few instances where there was doubt, notes
have been included in the text. Anything in brackets [ ] is not
part of the original text. A question mark within parentheses, (?),
indicates that there was difficulty in reading original text. In
these instances, the reader may want to consult the original
document. Occasionally, if there was some doubt about a
particular letter combination, alternative spellings are provided
in brackets.
The index that has been created to the tax list has the same information
as the tax list itself but it is in alphabetical order. The original
tax list is in alphabetical order by the first letter of the surnames,
but not by the whole surname. It seems that they may be listed in
order of visitation, but that can not be confirmed. There are very
few people listed with more than one poll. Because of this, those listed
with only a poll tax and no land may be young adults still living in
the family household but listed separately. If so, their father or
mother may be listed next to them.
To go from the index listing to the listing in the original list, just
click on the surname. To return to the index, click on the "BACK" button
of your browser. Full navigational capabilities are also provided at the
bottom of each page.
