Scuppernun in North Carolina

In the name of God Amen the fourteenth day of November Annoque Domini One thousand seven hundred and fifteen I John Tarkington of Scuppernun aforesaid being very sick and weak tho of perfect mind and memory praised be Almighty God and considering the ceartainty of death and the unceartain time thereof do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following first of all I bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping for pardon and remission of all my sins through the meritt and mediation of Jesus Christ my only saviour and Redeemer my body I committ to the Earth to be buried in decent manner att the discretion of my Executrix hereafter named.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Martha Tarkington the Plantation and house with the household goods & furniture wherein I now dwell and the utensills thereto belonging dureing her naturall life and after her decease to my son William Tarkington and his heirs foreever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my said son William all other my lands and plantations & also two cows & calves one sow two pigs one yeo one pewter dish six plates one feather bed and furniture and my gunn, one large pott the first colt that the mare brings which I now also give my loving wife, and in case my wife intermarrys after my decease then the above lands and plantations, goods and chattells with their increase to be delivered to my said son William when he attains to the age of sixteen years otherwise to continue under my said wife till the age of eighteen.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Tarkington one cow & calves one heifer of thre yeares old and one yee.

Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Rebecca Tarkington two heifers of three years old.

Item - I give and bequeath all the rest of my goods & chattells not herein before given & bequeath unto my said wife Martha Tarkington and her heirs forever.

Item - I do make and ordain Edward Phelps of Scuppernun aforesaid overseer of this my last will & testament

Item - I do nominate and appoint my loving wife Martha Tarkington sole executrix of this my last will & testament revoking all former wills or wills by me in any wise heretofore made or declared. In testimony whereof I have hereunto sett my hand & seale the day & year first above written.
