Many thanks to Mike Schoettle for transcribing and formatting this census and to
Kay Lynn Sheppard
for providing a written transcription to work from. We are fortunate to have such dedicated
volunteers.
Every effort has been made to transcribe this census as written. Even obvious errors are not
corrected. To make the census easier to read, the census affirmative mark "/" was replace by a
"Y". The readability of this census is good, so there should be relatively few errors, however
the potential for error exists between the letters "a" and "o", and between the letters "e" and
"i".
The 1870 census began 1 June. This transcription is organized by page number within
the townships.
There is an index to each person in the entire census. It is arranged alphbetically so you won't
have to scan through each page looking for surnames of interest. Each person in the index is
linked to their respective census page. Merely click on the person's name in the index and
you will go to that person in the census. When you are done looking at the page click on your
browser's BACK button to return to the index right where you left it. If you want to go to another
page or a different area of the index, full navigational capability is located at the bottom of
each page.
In addition to an index by person, you can click on a census page within a township to view the
census by pages with the township. At the bottom of the page, you can click on the next or
previous page of the township. On the last page of the township census, clicking "Next page"
will take you to the first page of the census of the next township. Likewise, if you are on the first page of
the township census, clicking on "Previous page" will take you to the last page of the prior
township.
Some families are split between pages in the census. If the family you are researching is the
first or last family on the page, you will need to check the adjoining page.
As always, even though this data is presented here, it is best to check the original source.
The following table is the breakdown of the numbered columns shown on the census pages:
