In the name of God Amen: I Joseph A. Spruill of the County of Tyrrell and State of North Carolina being of sound and disposing mind do make ordain and establish this my last will and testament as follows.-

First - I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Mary Spruill the house and lot In Columbia in which I now live together all the household & kitchen furniture that belongs in said lot, to her & her heirs forever.

Secondly- I give & bequeath to my beloved wife Mary Spruill the amount that may be realized from an insurance policy issued by the North Carolina Insurance Company upon my life for the sum of three thousand dollars which was taken out for the benefit of my said wife and is in her name.

Thirdly- It is my will and desire that all the ballance of my real estate and timber trees may be sold by my executors herein after named upon the very best terms and the proceeds arising therefrom together with the amount that may realized by them from an Insurance policy insured by the International Life Insurance Society of London for five thousand dollars upon my life may be applied to the payment of my Debts, it is also my will and desire that any and all other property of which I shall die seized and possesd except my negroes may be disposed of by my executors as above and the proceeds applied to the payment of my debts.

Fourthly- It is my will and desire that any money remaining in the hands of my executors arising from the sale of my property or otherwise after paying my just debts together with my negroes may be divided as follows,- one third I will and bequeath to my beloved wife Mary Spruill, one third I will and bequeath to my sister Sally Castello if living at the time of my death and if not to her children, and third I give and bequeath to my niece Sophy E. Morse.

I hereby nominate and appoint H. B. Short and Charles Latham my executors to this my last will and testament - In testimony of all which I have hereunto set If my hand and seal hereby revoking all other wills made by me.

The due execution of the foregoing paper writing by Joseph A. Spruill the testator as his last Will and Testament was proved in open court by A. W. Norman and H. H. Norman the subscribing witnesses thereto ordered that the same be recorded and filed, at the same time Henry B. Short and Charles Latham the executors therein named appeared and were duly qualified by taking the oath prescribed for execution.
