Ordered that Jos. Alexander renew his guardian bond as to Benj. Spruill & that he enter into a bond of ten thousand dollars with Abner Alexander, Jno. McClees & Charles McClees securities.

Bond dated 8 Feb 1836 in the amount of four thousand dollars appointing Benjamin Spruill special administrator of the estate of Charles T. Spruill deceased, Jos. Alexander & Thos. H. Alexander securities.

Petition April Term 1836 of Ann Spruill whose husband Charles Spruill died intestate on the last day of January 1836 leaving her unprovided for. She prays the court order that her year's allowance be layed off out of the estate.

Bond dated 25 Apr 1836 in the amount of twelve thousand dollars appointing George H. Alexander guardian of Benjamin Spruill orphan of Charles T. Spruill deceased, Joseph Alexander & Hezekiah G. Spruill securities.

Bond dated 26 Apr 1836 in the amount of twenty thousand dollars appointing Benjamin Spruill administrator of the estate of Charles T. Spruill deceased, Hez. G. Spruill, Wm. Mann & Samuel Leigh securities.

Bond dated 23 Jan 1837 in the amount of fifteen thousand dollars appointing Jos. Alexander guardian of Benjamin Alexander orphan of Charles T. Spruill deceased, Thos. H. Alexander & Abner Alexander securities.

Petition October Term 1837 by John Sanderson and his wife Ann and of Benjamin Spruill Junr. by his guardian Jos. Alexander who state that Charles T. Spruill died intestate on or about 31 Jan 1835 and administration on his estate was granted to Benjamin Spruill Junr. Amonst other goods and chattels there were a number of negroes belonging to the estate which now number thirteen or fourteen and are now in the hands of Benjamin Spruill the said administrator. The said John in right of his wife Ann who was the widow of the said Charles is entitled to one third of said slaves and your petitioner Benjamin who is the only son and child of said Charles to two thirds of said slaves. Petitioners are desirous of having a fair division of said slaves and the administrator is willing. Petitioners pray a court order for the division of said slaves according to law.

Petition October Term 1837 by John Sanderson and his wife Ann stating that Charles T. Spruill former husband of your petitioner Ann died intestate on or about 31 Jan 1835 seized and possessed of a tract of about 400 acres joining the lands of George Alexander & Samuel Leigh. Petitioners pray that the dower of Ann in said land be layed off to her. Petitioners further state that administration on the estate of the said Charles T. Spruill was granted to Benjamin Spruill against whom your petitioners pray process and also against Joseph Alexander the guardian of Benjamin Alexander Junr. the only child and heir at law of the said Charles T. Spruill.

Laying off of the dower of Ann Spruill in the lands of her deceased husband Charles T. Spruill on 22 Dec 1837 by John McClees Sheriff and Joseph McClees, John Hoskins, Enoch Ludford, Warren Alexander, Richard Spruill, Joseph Melson, Johnson Mann, Harolea (?) Brickhous, Joseph Pledger, Redick Alexander, John Midyett & Joseph Caroon disinterested freeholders. Lands were comprised of 435 acres on the north side of Little Alligator Creek and 145 acres were set off to the widow including the dwelling and the out houses.

Bond dated 22 Apr 1839 in the amount of six thousand dollars appointing Jos. Alexander guardian of Benjamin Alexander a minor orphan, Thos. H. Alexander, Abner Alexander & John McClees securities.

Petition at January Court 1840 by Benjamin Spruill per guardian Joseph Alexander and John Sanderson who state that they are tenants in common of negro man Harmon, petitioner Benjamin being entitled to two thirds and petitioner John to one third of said negro. They further represent that they are desirous of effecting a division of said negro and pray a court order for sale.


Transcriber's notes:

Tyrrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of Charles T. Spruill to Ann Thoroughgood on 2 Mar 1835, Wm. Mann security; also the marriage of Jno. Sanders to Ann Spruill on 19 April 1837, C. J. Lewis security.

The 1830 estate papers of Ann Marriner show that Charles T. Spruill had an earlier marriage to Ann Marriner's daughter, Martha Alexander, and that Joseph Alexander, George H. Alexander, Thomas H. Alexander and Abner Alexander were brothers in law.
