In the name of God amen: The twenty first day of November 1785 I Ann Sedgex of the County of Tyrrell in the State of North Carolina being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to dye do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God, and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form Viz:

Imprinis - I give and bequeath unto my grandson Simeon Spruill one negroe man named Tom and one negroe woman named Dinah and one negroe girl named June to him and his heirs and assigns forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Silvah all my right and title to five negroes named Pleasant and one negroe boy named Mingo and one negroe girl named Lucey and one negroe girl named Judey and one negroe girl named Cate to her and her heirs and assigns forever.

Item - I give to the heirs of my son Abraham Jennet deceas'd one shilling Sterling.

Item - I give to the heirs of my son John Jennet deceas'd one shilling.

Item - I give to the heirs of my son Joseph Jennet deceas'd one shilling.

Item - I give to the heirs of my daughter Ann Spruill deceas'd one shilling sterling.

Item - I give to my cousin Benjamin Hassell forty shillings in money to be raised out of my Estate.

Item - I give to Rebecca Hunnings forty shillings to be raised out of my Estate.

Item - I give and bequeath to my friend Hezekiah Spruill one negroe boy named Sam to him and his heirs and assigns forever.

Item - It is my Will and desire that all my cattle hogs and sheep and all my household furniture be sold at publick vendue by my Executors and the money arising from the sail to pay off the small Legacies before mentioned and the remainder part of the money arising from the said sail with all the remainder part of my Estate both real and personal.

Item - I give and bequeath to my grandson Simeon Spruill and to my friend Hezekiah Spruill to be equally divided between them the said Simeon Spruill and Hezekiah Spruill to them and their heirs and assigns forever.

Item - I like wise constiture make and ordain my friend Hezekiah Spruill and my grandson Simeon Spruill my whole and sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament and I do utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every other former testament wills legacies and executors by me in any ways before named willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament in Witness whereof I the said Ann Sedgex have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written.

January Session 1786

The last will and testament of Ann Sedgex being exhibited in open court by Col. Hezekiah Spruill was proved by the oath of Joseph Wimbrow and ordered to be recorded.

Col. Hezekiah Spruill and Simion Spruill appeared in open court and qualifyed executors to the last will and testament of Ann Sedgex deceased.

July Session 1786

Ordered that the executors of Ann Sedgex deceased sell the remaining part of the estate of said deceased which is not yet divided & the money arising from said sale to be divided betwen the heirs of John Sedgex deceased & the heirs of Ann Sedgex deceased & that Francis Cummins, Joseph Pledger & William Howett or either two of them divide the same & make return to next court.

Sedgix, Ann, 1786


Summons dated 5 Oct 1786 and issued 25 Nov 1786 for Hezekiah Spruill & Simion Spruill executors of Ann Sedgix deceased to appear in court on the first Monday in January next to answer the petition of Nathan Hooker administrator.

Execution dated 30 Apr 1794 and dated 17 May 1794 against the goods & chattels, lands & tenements of John Warrington for 94 pounds and 8 pence which lately Ann Sedgwicks' executors recovered from John Warrington for debt damage costs & charges.

Execution dated 28 Jul 1794 and issued 23 Aug 1794 anainst the goods & chattels, lands & tenements of Hezekiah Spruill & Simion Spruill executors of Ann Sedgwicks for three pounds, fourteen shillings & seven pence adjudged by the court for the costs of a suit brought by the executors of Ann Sedgwick's executors against Henry Norman and dismissed for want of a declaration.

There are other papers relating to a suit over ownership of a cow.
