In the name of God amen: I William Hassell of the County of Tyrrell in the Province of North Carolina being sick in body but of sound and disposing mind and memory praised by the Almighty and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner following. First I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God my Maker and my body to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executors and as for such wordly goods as it hath pleased God to bestow on me I give and dispose of the same in manner following viz.

Item - I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Ann Hassell one chest one bed and furniture one linnen Wheel and two woolings wheels five cows and calves all my pewter and all my earthen ware and all my potts and all my hogs to Will and dispose of as she shall think proper.

Item - I give and bequeath to my son William Hassell one cow and calf to him and his heirs forever -

Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Ann Hassell one bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Hannah one bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever.

Item- I give and bequeath to my daughter Polley one bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Penelope Hassell one bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my son Jesse Hassell all my land from Young's line to the branch adjoining my plantation called Rattle Snake Branch to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my son Joshua Hassell my hunting gun to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my son Jeremiah Hassell one cow and calf to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I lend unto my loving wife Ann Hassell all the residue and remainder of my whole Estate real and personal to bring up my children upon, but it is my will and desire that at the day of the marriage of any of my children to have a cow and calf delivered to them and each of them by my Executors hereafter nominated and appointed.

Item - I give and bequeath to my son Joshua Hassell all my land between Rattle Snake Branch and Nicolas Gilberds line but provided that my son Jessey Hassell should pay unto the said Joshua Hassell the sum of twenty pounds specie then I give the said land to the said Jesse Hassell to him and his heirs forever.

Item - It is my will and desire that at the death or marriage of my wife Ann Hassell that all the residue of my Estate should be equally divided between all my children to them and their heirs forever. And I do hereby nominate and appoint my said son Jesse Hassell and William Hassell and my friend Joshua Leary Executors of this my last Will and Testament. And I do hereby utterly revoke renounce and disannul all former and other Wills by me made hereby ratifying and allowing this to be my last Will and Testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto Signed Sealed and Published this as my last Will and Testament this 25 day of November in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty three.

Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions


January Session 1784

Appeared in open court Jesse Hassell and exhibited the last will and testament of William Hassell Senr. deceased which was proved by the oath of Joseph Rousham and he saw Nicholas Gilbert and Joshua Leary sign at the same {time} as subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.

Also the said Jesse Hassell returns into court an inventory of the estate of the said William Hassell deceased on oath and ordered to be filed and the said Jesse Hassell qualified as executor to the last will and testament of the said deceased.

October Session 1788

Appeared Joshua Leary & qualifyed to the last will and testament of William Hassell deceased executor left in said will.
