Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions


July Session 1785

Appeared in open court John Poole and prayed an administration on the estate of John Ewen deceased granted and give bond in 1,500 pounds Joseph Pledger Esqr. and William Cohoon securities.

Also returned an inventory in open court of the estate of the said John Ewen deceased ordered to be filed.

Also prayed an order of sale of the estate of John Ewen deceased granted.

October Session 1785

William Howett Deputy Sheriff produced in court an account of sales of the estate of Joshua Alexander deceased amounting to 57 pounds, 8 shillings & 9 pence ordered to be filed - also an account of sales of the estate of John Ewen deceased amounting to 67 pounds, 8 shillings & 5 pence ordered to be filed.

April Session 1787

John Poole administrator of John Ewen deceased exhibited in court an account against the said deceaseds estate being examined by the said court and find a balance due the said estate of John Ewen deceased to the amount of 89 pounds ordered filed.

July Session 1788

Thomas Stewart and Hezekiah Spruill Esquires appointed to audit and inspect and settle the accounts of guardians administrators and administratrix accounts of the deceased estates which is accordingly done as per entrys following to wit - John Poole administrator of John Ewen deceased and find a balance due to the estate of said deceased of 25 pounds, 13 shillings & 10 pence filed.

April Session 1791

Ordered that Bartlett Jones be appointed guardian to Tabitha Ewen orphan of John Ewen deceased and give bond 500 pounds Corban Jones & John Poole Esqr. securities.

January Session 1792

John Poole Esqr. exhibits into court an account against the estate f John Ewen deceased to the amount of 8 pounds & 18 shillings examined & allowed ordered filed.

October Sesion 1799

The account of the estate of John Ewen deceased is returned in open court audited and find a ballance due the estate of 93 pounds, 8 shillings & 11 pence as per returns filed.

Ordered that Thomas Hoskins John Clayton Esqrs. and John A. Patrick be appointed to divide the estate of John Ewen deceased and make returns to next court.

Guardian bond dated 29 Oct 1794 in the amount of five hundred pounds appointing David Hunter guardian of Dorcas Uin orphan of John Uin deceased with Enoch Ludford & William Megound securities.

Guardian bond dated 27 Apr 1799 in the amount of three hundred pounds appointing John Murphy guardian of Dorcas Uin orphan of John Uin deceased with Thomas Hoskins & Levi Bateman securities.

Account of David Hunter as guardian to the estate of Darcus Ewen dated 24 Apr 1800 in Alligator.

Petition of Tabitha alias Dorcas Ewen by her guardian and next friend, John Murphy. Petitioner is an infant under the age of 21 years and daughter of John Ewen deceased who died intestate at Little York in Virginia. After the death of her father, her mother Nancy intermarried with David Hunter, schoolmaster, who soon became guardian of Tabitha and took into his possession the estate of said John Ewen deceased, a considerable personal estate consisting of cattle, negroes, etc. That included a cow and calf and their offspring given the petitioner when a child by Baker and always considered to be hers. David Hunter has refused all requests to turn over the estate of her father and continues to refuse after the death of his wife Nancy and the appointment of John Murphy as her guardian. To date he has also refused to turn over his accounts to her new guardian.
