In the name of God amen: I William Dowdy of the County of Tyrrell and State of North Carolina being of sound and perfect mind and memory blessed be God do this seventeenth day of May 1811 make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following ---

I lend to my beloved wife Sarah Dowdy during her widdowhood my land whereon I now live and the rest of my property to raise my children and fifty acres of land lies in Currituck County which is by deed to myself and John Dowdy which is to be sold for the benefit of schooling my children.

I give to my son Joseph Dowdy at the decease of my wife my land whereon I now live and rest of my property to be equally divided between the rest of my children at the marriage of my wife or decease.

I hereby make and ordain my beloved wife Sara Dowdy executrix of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I the said William Dowdy have to this my last will and testament set my hand and seal the day and year above written.

Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions


July Session 1811

The last will and testament of William Dowdy was proved in open court agreeable to law by the oath of Thomas Leigh and William Combs will filed.

Sarah Dowdy came into open court and quallified as executrix to the last will & testament of William Dowdy deceased.

Sarah Dowdy returned in court on oath an inventory of the movable estate of William Dowdy deceased filed.

April Session 1815

Ordered that Danl. Sawyer Samuell Spruill Esqr. and Robert Pledger audite and settle the estate of Sarah and William Dowdey deceased and make returns to next court.

July Session 1815

Ordered that Thomas Carroon be appointed guardian to Nancy and Patsy Dowdy orphans of William Dowdy deceased and has given bonds in the sum of one thousand pounds Nevill Caroon his security.

Ordered that Nevill Carroon be appointed guardian to Louisa and Matilda Dowdy orphans of William Dowdy deceased and has entered into bond in the sum of one thousand pounds Thos. Caroon his security.

Ordered that Joseph Mann be appointed guardian to Ivy Dowdy orphan of William Dowdy and has entered into bond in the sum of five hundred pounds James Caroon security.

October Session 1815

Ordered that Thomas Leigh Wm. Combs & Robert Pledger be appointed to divide the estate of Wm. Dowdy deceased agreeable to law & make returns to next court.

January Session 1816

Thomas Leigh returned into court the division of the estate of Wm. Dowdy deceased.

January Session 1817

The guardian account of Joseph Dowdy orphan of William Dowdy was returned to court by Thomas Leigh the guardian & filed.

January Session 1818

The account of Thomas Leigh guardian to William Dowdy was returned into court and ordered filed.

July Session 1830

Jos. Mann came into open court & renewed his guardian bond to Ira Dowdy an orphan & gave for security Eward Mann & Eph. Mann.

Midgett, Fredrick Davenport & John Thoroughgood all of Tyrrell County bound in the sum of five hundred pounds … for the benefit of the child hereafter named, committed to the tutition of the said Thos. Transcriber's note: The first bondsman and the guardian are different names a very unusual circumstance. Did clerk make a mistake? In following other bonds of same timeframe, the first named bondsman is also the one named as guardian.

Dowdy Decd. the sum of one hundred and three dollars and sixteen cents it being for value recd. In witness we have set our hand and seal. 22th August 1817.

Document 8: Summons

Front: To the sheriff of Tyrrel County … commanded to summon Richard Howett admr. of William Howett decd. Samuel Spruill admr. of Robart I. Pledger decd. and take the body of John Alexander … so that you have them before the Justices of our County Court of Pleas and Quarter-Sessions, at the next Court, to be held for this County of Tyrrel, at the Court-House in Columia, on the first Monday in July next; then and ther to answer unto Navel Carroon Grd. Of Wm. Dowdy heirs in a plea of debt that they rendered unto him the sum one hundred and three dollars and sixteen cents which they owes and from him an justly detains to his damage one hundred dollars. 4 April 1820.

Issued the 24 day of June 1820.
