Bond dated 31 Jan 1834 in the amount of five hundred dollars appointing Benjamin Sikes administrator of the estate of Isaiah Cahoon deceased, Thos. Alexander & F. F. Fagan securities.

Laying off of the years allowance to the widow Orpha Cahoon of $42.90 in July 1834 by Chas. McClees & Wm. Alfred.

Petition July Term 1834 by Benjamin Sikes administrator of the estate of Isaiah Cahoon deceased showing that administration was granted to him as the greatest creditor. Sale of the personal effects was entirely insufficient to satisfy the claims against the estate and Isaiah Cahoon was indebted to him by judgements obtained against him during his lifetime of about two hundred dollars, by notes about forty dollars and by open account about sixty five dollars. After paying sundry debts and the years allowance of the widow, the remaining money from the sale of the perishable estate does not exceed eighty five dollars. He can not recover the balance due from said estate without an order from the court to sell the lands of which his intestate died seized and possessed joining Ashbee Liverman & Thomas Sawyer. Petitioner further shows that his intestate left the following children viz. James, Selby, William {blank space} & Sally all infants and under age except James.

Summons dated the fourth Monday in July 1834 for James Cahoon and Joseph Halsey guardian ad litem to Selby, William & Sally Cahoon infants of Isaiah Cahoon to appear in court on the fourth Monday in October next to show cause, if any, why the petition of Benjamin Sikes for the sale of the land left by their father should not be granted.

Petition October Term 1834 by Orpah Cahoon for dower in the lands of Isaiah Cahoon who died seized and possessed of a tract of about 200 acres joining Dempsey Liverman. Charles McClees and others. Petitioner further states that her husband left as his heirs at law James, Sylvanus Abi Mary William Sarah John & Abel Cahoon, all infants under the age of twenty one except James Cahoon.

Laying off of the dower of Orpha Cahoon widow of Isaiah Cahoon in the lands of her deceased husband on 20 Jan 1835 by the Sheriff, Hezekiah G. Spruill and Edmund Clayton, Thompson Liverman, Dempsey Liverman, Joab Sawyer, Barney White, John Patrick, Ashbee Liverman, James Davenport, Isaac Meekins, William Alfred, John McClees & Elias Liverman. The widow received 20 acres bounded by Charles McClees, Wm. Browles (?), Dempsey Liverman & Joab Sawyer. Petition for dower was filed at October Term 1834. Lands estimated at 200 acres.

Transcriber's Notes:

Tyrrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of Orpha Cahoon to Job McGown on 15 Apr 1843, Charles McClees security; also Isaiah Cohoon to Sally Bank on 14 Jan 1812, Joseph White security.

The 1850 census shows Job McGown (71), Orpey McGown (45), Nancy Richerson (31) & Abel Cohoon (19) together in one household. Nearby is a household with Abi Cohoon (33), Mary Strebeck (22), William P. Cohoon (2) & Frances I. Cohoon (2). Another household with Sylvenus Cohoon (34), Olly Cohoon (25), Mary F. Cohoon (9), etc. The point is that if Orpha is about 45 years of age, she couldn't have children 34 and 33 years of age. It seems reasonable to assume that Isaiah married Sally Banks first, who then died after having an undetermined number of children, and he then married Orpha, for which no marriage bond exists, and had more children.
