Ambrose, Jesse, 1798

Petition dated January Term 1799 from Sarah Ambrose, widow and relict of Jesse Ambrose deceased, claiming that her husband had owned 100 acres of land on Rattlesnake Island during their marriage and that in order to try and cheat her out of her dower in that land gifted it two his sons, James Ambrose and Micajah Ambrose. She is requesting her dower in this land.

Response of James Ambrose & Micajah Ambrose, defendants against Sarah Ambrose, plaintiff, in July Term 1799. Their father Jesse Ambrose died 2 June 1798. The land in question was disposed of by regular deed of sale long prior to his death and they have been in possession of it for years and have made many improvements. When the peitioner married Jesse Ambrose he was possessed of considerable substance which she subsequently squandered, carried away or sod when she eloped from his bed and board before Jesse's death, leaving him with little but his shirt on his back and removing to Orange County, NC. She never afterward cohabited with Jesse or the defendants. The defendants have supported Jesse and kept him off the rolls of the parish ever since.

Transcriber's Notes:
Tyrrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of Jesse Ambrus to Sarah Crank on 22 May 1780 with John Farlow & Jno. Anderson as security; also the marriage of James Ambrose to Ruth Hare on 5 Jan 1784 with James Phelps security; and also the marriage of Micajah Ambrose to Elisabeth Phelps on 7 Oct 1790. These dates make it obvious that Sarah was not the mother of James and Micajah.
