Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions


April Session 1789

Ordered that Martha Alexander have leave of administration on the estate of Anthony Alexander deceased her late husband and give bond 500 pounds William Howett and Samuel Mann securities and qualifyed accordingly.

Ordered that Martha Alexander administrator of Anthony Alexander deceased have leave to sell the perishable estate of the said deceased and make return to next court.

July Session 1789

John Snell Deputy Sheriff returns into court an account of sales of the estate of Anthony Alexander deceased amounting to 68 pounds, 19 shillings & 9 pence ordered filed.

October Session 1789

John Snell Deputy Sheriff exhibits into court an account of sales being a second account of part of the estate of Anthony Alexander deceased to amount of 44 pounds, 7 shillings & 4 pence ordered filed.

July Session 1792

Ordered that John L. Boyce be appointed guardian to Thomas & Sally Alexander orphans of Anthony Alexander deceased and give bond 300 pounds William McDaniel & Jesse Merritt securities.

Ordered that Thomas Hopkins, Edward Roughton, Richard Routon, Daniel Routon, Samuel Hopkins, Paul Thoroughgood, Joseph Hassell, Robert McAlister, John Tweedy, Henry Alexander, Enoch Ludford & John Foster, together with the Surveyor of the County divide and lay off one third of the lands of Anthony Alexander deceased for Martha Boyce late widow of the said deceased & make return to next court.

October Session 1792

Ordered that Jesse Merritt be appointed guardian to the orphans of Anthony Alexander deceased to wit Thomas & Sally Alexander and give bond in 300 pounds Phillip Hopkins & William McDonald securities.

Ordered that Jesse Merritt guardian to the orphans of Anthony Alexander deceased take into his possession the property of the said orphans.

Ordered that John L. Boyce be cited to appear to next court and settle his accounts as guardian to the orphans of Anthony Alexander deceased.

July Session 1793

Col. John Warrington one of the auditors appointed to audite the accounts of John L. Boyce administrator of Anthony Alexander deceased exhibits the same into court and there appears a balance of 58 pounds, 17 shillings & 3 3/4 pence due the orphans of the said deceased & filed.

Bond dated 27 Jul 1792 in the amount of three hundred pounds appointing John L. Boyce guardian to Thomas & Salley Alexander orphans of Anthony Alexander deceased, William McDaniel & Jesse Merritt securities.

Summons dated 26 Oct 1792 and issued 20 Nov 1792 for John L. Boyce to appear at court in January Term next and make full settlement with the court of his accounts as guardian of the orphans of nthony Alexander deceased.

Bond dated 26 Oct 1792 in the amount of three hundred pounds appointing Jesse Merritt guardian to Thomas & Salley Alexander orphans of Anthony Alexander deceased William McDonald & Phillip Hopkins securities.

Petition October Term 1797 by Jesse Merritt who states that in July Term 1792 he became security for John Lewis Boyce as guardian to the orphans of Anthony Alexander deceased. John Lewis Boyce had married the widow of said Anthony Alexander and was at the time residing in Tyrrell County. Said Boyce has since lived outside the county, thus exposing his securities to danger and has wasted a considerable amount of the personal property of his wards. Petitioner requests said John Lewis Boyce be subpoenaed to appear at April Term next to show cause why the said guardianship should not be taken from him and the petitioner be released from his securityship.
