The following FTM report on the descendants
of Moses and Elizabeth Reece Butler was
generated on October 9, 1999, by Philip
Underwood-Sheppard. I am nowhere near having
the complete record of Moses' descendants and
am in the process of seeing if some research
can be done for me in Transylvania County to
add to the report. I've included only
four generations in an effort to
leave out folks who are, or may still be,
living. That includes cutting out survivors in
obituaries and in some sets of parents' list of
children.
A note about veracity of the
records and the sources: As with all published
genealogy, mistakes will creep in. I have noted
in the endnotes either documents or individuals
where the information was obtained. Living so
far from Transylvania County makes it difficult
to do original research among documents, but
even documents can be "doctored," say one thing
when another was happening. I've tried my best
and am completely open to the correction of my
data. Dates without endnotes can be attributed
to the location of the burial site or my
failure to document the source. If it is a
cemetery record, the cemetery will be listed.
Also, see "A final note"
below.
Census records:
1) Macon County, N. C. in
the 1850 Census, A Snapshot in Time,
compiled by McRae and Leverette Teresita
Press,1997.
2) Transylvania County,
North Carolina, 1870 Census, Linda
Hoxit Raxter, ed., Alexandra's Family Tree
House, 1998.
3) 1880 Census of

4) 1860 Jackson

2) Joseph and Catherine
Deck Welch and Their Descendants,
by Thelma Welch Swanson. privately
published.
Individuals:
1) the late Bertie Galloway
Shepherd (Galloway descendants
of the Butlers)
2) Donna Head
Berg (Ellenburg descendants of
the Butlers)
3) Evelyn
Huerd (while not related to the
Butlers, Evelyn provided information on
the Butler/Teague family of Longview,
Washington)
4) Linda Hoxit
Raxter (who completed a formal
search for documents pertaining to Moses
Butler)
5) Virginia "Gigi" Foster
Creel (Foster descendants of the
Butlers)
Other sources:
1) North Carolina death
certificates
2) Transylvania County
deeds
3) Transylvania County marriage
records
4) Jackson County
wills
5) Linda Hoxit Raxter's
detailed cemetery surveys at Alexandra's
Family Tree House.
A final note: If
this information is useful to you, e.g. helps
you fill in those ever-present blanks, then by
all means use the data. But, please,
include the sources s a credit to my work and
the work of others. It should be
noted here that some endnotes didn't transfer
from my FTM program: data on the descendants in
the Butler/Ellenburg line should be attributed
to Donna Head Burg; data on the Jesse Lowe
family came from Transylvania
County, North Carolina, 1870 Census, Linda
Hoxit Raxter, ed., Alexandra's Family Tree
House, 1998; and data on the descendants of the
Foster/Galloway descendants of the Butler's
should be attributed to Virginia Foster
Creel.

Notes for BERTIE ELLA
GALLOWAY:
My grandmother, Bertie Ella
Galloway, was born February 01, 1903, in
Transylvania County, N. C. She lived in
the area of the Davidson River in what is
now Pisgah National Forest. (I have yet
to discover exactly where the site of the
Galloway home was.) Grandma was the
seventh child of 11 born to Rufus
McKellan Galloway and Susan Clerendy
Butler Galloway. I know very little about
her early life due to her reluctance to
share much about herself.
About 1920, the family moved to
Gastonia, N. C., for jobs in the cotton
mills. Shortly thereafter, Grandma met my
grandfather, T. A. "Bill" Shepherd
(1904-1983). They married February 24,
1923, in York County, S. C. Grandpa was
working in the mills when my grandmother
gave birth to her first child, my father,
Carl B. Sheppard.
Seven more children were to
follow (in all, six of the eight survived
infancy), born in various places, due in
part to the difficulties of holding a job
in the mill and the fact that my father
was involved in the Loray Mill Strike in
Gastonia. About 1940, Grandpa bought a
home in Gastonia where Grandma was to
live until Grandpa's death in 1983. She
was all her life a housewife of a mill
worker and farmer. I remember her as a
very quiet person of little conversation
but a sense of wit that showed on
occasion.
My father worked in Gastonia
during his later years, and everyday at
lunchtime, he would drive from his work
to Grandma's house for a couple of tomato
sandwiches that Grandma always had ready
for him.
After the death of Grandpa,
Grandma moved in with my Aunt Marie in
Gastonia and lived there until her death
on December 05, 1986. She was buried
beside her husband of 60 years in
Hollywood Cemetery in Gastonia, N.
C.
Grandma's life had been very
hard on her. I rarely saw her smile. She
was a small woman, bent over from a life
time of hard work in the home and on the
farm. She knew only the life of those
with few worldly goods. Her small home
was a two bedroom affair with a den and a
kitchen. She learned while living with
her parents-in-law how to can fruits and
vegetables, and there was always a stock
of the best of the garden. The times I
did spend with her were special to me. It
was through her occasional stories that I
began a journey of falling in love with
the county of her birth.
