Many of Scotland County's pioneer families eventually migrated to South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. Present-day neighbors of Scotland County include: Richmond, Hoke, Moore and Robeson Counties. The county seat and largest town within the county is Laurinburg.  South Carolina neighbors include Marlboro and Dillon Counties.
