BROCK, HENRY, ITHA, PERCISE, PERSISE, PRECISE, PRECYTHE posted by Bill Brock on Saturday, November 8, 1997

I wish to include the name PRECISE. Through the years this name has undergone several changes in spelling, but I believe this is the correct spelling. It has also been PERSISE, PERCISE, etc.and for the last couple of generations PRECYTHE. They have been in Piney Grove Township in Sampson County and more recently in Faison, N.C. They have also been in Wayne County for many years. I have been attempting to trace them for several years but have had some difficulty because of the spelling. My mother was ITHA PRECYTHE BROCK, her father: HENRY C. PRECYTHE, my great grandfather: Joseph PRECISE, my great great grandfather: John PRECISE. I know there were some PRECISE in Virginia in several counties, but I have been unable to connect them up thus far, although I am still working on it. I would be quite happy if I could find the parents of John Precise. I will be glad to furnish additional information on the PRECISE-PRECYTHE familes should anyone wish.

It is believed that their names were John, Edmund and James, however I have found no documented evidence to prove their link to these parents. The 1790 Census lists Rice as head of household with three sons and three daughters. Sampson County Court Records show that Civility filed for adminstration of estate after Rice's death in 1797, but no children where named. My information comes from the Bible of Ephriam OATES and Lucy SAUNDERS. My thirdgreatgrandfather and the youngest son of Stephen OATES and Elizabeth Ann SHIPP. Stephen OATES and Elizabeth SHIPP'S children are William 18/Mar./1798 Sampson County North Carolina m: Sarah SELLERS 12/Feb./1833 Catalpa Pike County Alabama. Their children were William Calvin John Alva, Mary Jane, Amelia Louise, Melissa Ann, Amanda Elizabeth, Thomas Carraway, James Wyatt, Claudius, Josh. John rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the Confederate Army and was promoted to Captain when the Captain of Company G 15th Alabama was killed, but he was shortly mortally wounded afterwards leading his company in the Fifteenth Alabama's assault on Little Round Top 2/Jul./1863, he died twenty two days after he received his wounds. He for all practical purposes is buried somewhere near where he fell. Col OATES brother in law Thomas J. KELLY was killed in Co.E Tthirteenth Alabama in Pickett's charge. Mary's husband James Benjamin LONG died in 1864 and he is buried at Hollywood Cemetery Richmond. William Clavin OATES was elected Congress in 1880 and 1894 he was elected Alabama's 29th Governor. Carraway OATES d.b.1804 he was living in Henry County Alabama in 1850 members of his household were wife Catherine SKINNER, sons Nathan and James and daughters Sarah and Nancy. All children were born in Alabama. Nathan married Emeline Murphy of Henry County Alabama 5/Jun./1856. I have not found out anything bout the rest of the children. Stephen was a born in 1805 in Sampson County and he died in Texas in 1867. Catherine was born either in 1806-07 she married William J. GALLOWAY in 1848 also in Henry County Alabama, she andher husband might have moved to Texas after the War for Southern Independence.James was born in 1809 and he went to Texas with his brother Stephen, but never returned he died in 1863. The twins Peribhy also called (Phoebe) and Sena were born in 1810. They married twin brothers Tolbert and Albert PARISH. They were married in Henry County 10/Feb./1841, now the Henry County Marriage Records mentions Perihby or Phoebe's marriage. Robert was born in 1819 in Sampson County and he lived in Alabama until after the War for Southern Independence when he moved to Texas in 1872. John Charles and Ann M. were also twins born 8/May/1822 in Sampson County North Carolina, they were both marriedin Henry County Alabama, but John Charles moved to Texas after the second marriage and Ann married in Henry County also and she moved to Claybank Alabama she and her husbandare buriedin the Claybank Baptist Cemetery in Dale County Alabama. Henderson was born in Sampson County NorthCarolina and he moved to Yazoo County Mississippi after the Mexican American War. Emeline was born 1825 also in Sampson County. And she lived all her adult life in Alabama. My thirdgreatgrandfather Ephriam was born next 27/Jan./ 1826 SampsonCounty and he like most of his siblings grew up in Alabama. He did not move he stayed right in Henry County Alabama married 16/Aug./1849 Mary Ann Ward. Their children were Melinda Ann 1851-1929 married Dr. ThomasCarey SOLOMON 1873 they had three children Maud 1875 Tae 1877 and Ligon THOMAS 1881-1943. Dr. Wyatt STEPHEN my secondgreatgrandfather 1852-1913, his son was Walter Bragg OATES (1878-1955) my mother's paternal grandfather. Her father was Walter Neil OATES. James Edward(1854-1918)JohnCharles (b&d 1857)Margaret Mary Jane (1859-1939) Margaret OATES ephriam's sister born in Sampson County 1827 lived in Henry County married Jesse Mercier ROWE lived in Coffee County Alabama after 1850. Elizabeth and Eliza Jane born 19/Apr./1832 she lived and died in Henry County, so did Eliza. The last child was Fannie born 1834 she married George Solomon Hutto it is believed that she died either in Texas or on the way to Texas. I would like someone to if possible alookup on this family, please. I do not know if Stephen OATES and Elizabeth Ann SHIPP had a Bible or not his greatgreatgrandfather James was married by Rev. George HAWES, who must have been a Anglican Priest. So he might have records made in the parish church where he was buried Stephen OAtes died in 1835 and he was buriednearthee Carolina foothills between the HAuse and Cape Fear River. Before I forget the Haywood R..Faison Manuscript contains some information about the family. As well as the manuscript copy of the Berkley Parish Register compiled by Reverend George HAWES the pastor that performed James OATES and Elizabeth Perry EIVANS in 1695. If someone could do a look up and send me copies of these manuscripts I would appreciate it. I would also like a cemetery look up done for any information onthe gracve sites of Stephen OATES or his father'sprople as well as the WYATT'S his mother was a Mary Ann WYATT of Sampson County. His greatgrandmother OATES was Elizabeth WYATT. Her parentswere JohnWyatt and Rachal CALLOWAY, I would very much like to find out who his mother Mary Ann's parents were her father was named John I believe, her mother waseither named Mary or Jane I have no record of her surname. Could someone do a will look up for Stephen's will and his parents wills. And send me copies Please. Stephen's father died in 1815 he died in 1835 and his mother died in 1801 her will was probated in 1821. They all died in Sampson County North Carolina. His father was born in 25/Dec./1757 Dobbs County North Carolina he died 25/Mar./1815 Duplin, SampsonCounty North Carolina.Stephen wasborn 1783/88 died 1835 in Sampson County North Carolina his mother Mary Ann WYATT was born 1760(my source book has 1770 but I do not think that is correct) she died 1801 and her will was probated in 1821. I do not recall what the will book numbers and pages are. Is there any way someone could do a lookup anyway.

HARE posted by Bob on Friday, April 10, 1998

I am researching the ancestors of Joseph HARE (1749 - 1853; yes, 1853) who was apparently born near present-day Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC and one of 10 or 11 children. At present, we suspect that his parents were Joseph (Sr.) and Ann HARE but have not confirmed this yet. It is also suspected that his father (Joseph, Sr.?) may have died circa 1756 (as Cumberland Co. probate records suggest) and that his children subsequently moved to neighboring Sampson county and the northeastern coastal areas of NC (Bertie, Gates Co.'s, etc.). Although I don't presently know the names of his brothers (we suspect John, Robert, William, Edward, etc.), it is thought that they resided in these counties until at least 1800. As for Joseph, he apparently enlisted in the service in early 1776 and participated in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge (1776). He went on to serve out his 3-year military term and sometime in 1779, made his way (with an Edward Hale?) to then-Montgomery Co., VA (present-day Giles Co., VA) which, at that time, was the edge of the western frontier. There he settled and lived the remainder of his days as a noted frontier/Indian scout and land speculator. It is known that he did return to NC in 1781, however, to participate in the Rev. War Battles of Weitzel's Mill and Guilford Courthouse and was also present at Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown, VA. As for his suspected heritage, family lore has it that his ancestors fled religious persecution in France in the late 1600's for Barbados, living there for a short period of time before arriving in America circa 1710 (settling near Charleston, SC) and eventually migrating to the Fayetteville area (in the 1720's or 1730's?). Any info on Joseph, his parents and/or ancestors would be very much appreciated.

MARLEY posted by Emily Darlington on Wednesday, July 22, 1998

I am looking for a lost cemetary in what used to be considered Tomahawk. It was the MARLEY Cemetary, started around 100 yrs. ago. The last person to be burried there may have been 50 yrs. ago. There is no public info on this place and any help you may have would be greatly appreciated as there are homes being built around that area on black river and we do not want someone to build a home on top of our ancestors.
