Since the Revolutionary War in Richmond County consisted of months and months of licensed lawlessness, it was appropriate that it ended
in the courthouse. Beginning in June 1782, wartime Patriots evened the score through a series of civil and criminal trials. The highlight
came with seventeen September trials, in which thirty-nine Richmond County men faced charges of treason. State Attorney Morgan Brown tried
the first few cases on Friday, Oct. 4, warming up to the bulk of trials beginning Saturday morning at 8:00. Except for the verdicts, details
are long lost. Of the thirty-nine men prosecuted, five were found guilty-- William Burt, Duncan McFarland, John Peek, John Thornton, and
Shadrack Williamson. Another twenty-five swore allegiance to the Continental Government, and were found not guilty.

County, and died March 10, 1903 in Anson County, NC.

Notes for MARY ANN BROWN:
The marriage data is actually the date on Richmond County marriage bond showing Thomas W. Wright as the bondsman.

Notes for JOSEPH HARRINGTON WRIGHT:

Sometime in the late 1850's, Joseph moved his family to Autauga Co. Alabama. They can be found on the 1860 Census (listed as Right) living
in the Independence area. Joseph's occupation is listed as Blacksmith. It is unknown at this time if he served during the war.
Two documents pertaining to the sale & purchase of land w/Joseph & Ann's signatures(or marks) were found in Autauga. During their time in
Alabama, 2 of their children, Daniel & Emma were born. Joseph move the family back to Richmond Co. NC after the war.
It is not known why they moved to Alabama. We speculate that they followed family (Wright, Williamson, Brown) there. A further search into
the counties of Autauga, Monroe & Lowdnes might be fruitful.

It is not known who Josephs parents were. I suspect that it may have been Thomas Wright who married Nancy Williamson. Thomas was listed on
the marriage bond of Joseph & Ann. Nancy Williamson was the sister of Rebecca Williamson who married Daniel Brown (Ann's parents). If this
is true, that would make Joseph & Ann cousins. Source: Susan Hoke

Notes for REBECCA 'BECKY' WILLIAMSON:
Mrs. Myrtle Bridges,
My name is Thomas Sylvia and I'm starting my SAR application and using Isaac Williamson Sr. b.1758-1838 as my patriot. I was wondering
if you would like to help me with additional information to prove my lineage to Isaac Williamson.
I know the Society doesn't use DNA evidence but I recently matched with a first cousin of yours, Cathy Shipman on AncestryDNA and other
Williamson descendants. We spoke a couple months back when I was researching my Williamson line. William M Williamson b 1856 Richmond
County, NC was my 3x great grandfather, son of Rebecca Williamson b 1832 ( death certificate of William). I would appreciate any assistance
you may have and thank you for your time. Best Regards, (Thomas H. Sylvia)

Head Blown off by a Shot Gun---Daniel B. Brown, of Hamlet, Killed Himself
Daniel B. Brown of Hamlet Killed Himself at his Father-In-Laws---Drinking to Excess, Nerves All Unstrung---He Was Greatly Beloved By All---
It was Suicide---The Ceiling Spattered With His Brains---Statement Made by his Father-in Law---Remains to be Carried to Hamlet. ( Charlotte News )

This morning a few minutes after city court had convened, a messenger approached Chief Orr's desk and in an excited and hurried whisper
informed him that a white man named Mr. Daniel B. Brown, who is a son-in-law of Mr. George J. Freeman, had just committed suicide at Mr.
Freeman's residence, which is located on the corner of Twelfth and Caldwell. Chief Orr ordered out the patrol wagon and in company with
Officer Jetton and a News Reporter, was rapidly driven to the scene.
A large crowd of people (for news of this kind spreads rapidly) had gathered at the house, and it was with some difficulty that the reporter
and Dr. Strong, county physician, who had also been hastily sent for, could gain an entrance to the room where the tragedy had occurred. As
the writer entered the room the sight that met his eyes was indeed horrible, showing beyond any doubt that the victim had well planned his
death. Blood, hair and brains were scattered all over the room and on the top of the wall brains and hair had stuck where they were carried
by the shot. Mr. Brown when first discovered was lying face down across a chair, his head and arms touching the floor on one side and his feet
on the other. Investigation showed that his death was caused by the discharge of a double-barrel shot gun, which was resting between his legs,
he evidently having fallen in that position when the gun was discharged. The load of shot struck him near the front and left of his neck, and
came out just in front of the left ear, completely blowing off that side of his face.
Chief Orr, in the presence of several witnesses, picked up the gun and throwing open the breach, removed the shells, one of which had been
discharged.
It was the opinion of all who saw the remains that Mr. Brown had committed suicide and that it was not an accident, judging from the
position he was in: he was standing erect at the time the fatal shot was fired, holding the gun in from of him and pulling the trigger
with his right hand.
Mr. G.J. Freeman, father-in-law of the deceased, was interviewed by a reporter and gave the following information in regard to the tragedy:
"Up to three months ago my home was at Hamlet, NC. Mr. Brown was my son-in-law, having married my daughter fifteen years ago. His wife is
dead and his children, three little boys, have been living with me since her death. About fifteen days ago Brown passed through Charlotte en
route to Tennessee, where he went to visit relatives, returning here Wednesday night. He had been drinking heavily for the past two weeks,
but since Friday morning he complained of feeling bad and said he thought he would go to bed and rest awhile. Yesterday afternoon he did
not seem to be any better, so I sent for a physician. Last night after I had closed up my store, which adjoins my residence, I went into
his room, which is in the back part of the house, and talked to Brown for a few minutes. He remarked to me that he was nervous and did not
feel sleepy. I told him to go to bed, as I thought he would feel better if he could get some sleep. After I had left his room and gone into
my own room and retired, I heard Brown knock at my door. Calling to him to open the door, he came in and stood up by the fire, as he was in
his night clothes and said he was cold. After standing there a few minutes, he turned toward me and said "Mr. Freeman, there is someone who
is talking outside of the house and they will not go away." I started to get up, saying I would see if I could hear anyone talking. I could
not hear a sound, notwithstanding that he insisted that some one was talking in a loud tone. When I told him I would open the front door, he
remonstrated with me and said it would be dangerous. Seeing that Brown was excited I again went to his room with him and stayed there until
he had gone to bed. This morning about 6 o'clock Brown came into my room, saying he wanted to warm his feet, sitting down by the fire and
staying five or six minutes. My wife and my self got up and dressed. Brown again came back and complained of being sick. I gave him some
medicine and went into the store to open up. At breakfast he would not eat anything, saying he was not hungry. He left the table and returned
to my room, and I again entered the store, and it was then that I heard the report of the gun.
Rushing into my room I found Brown in the position he now occupies."
Mrs. Freeman's statement was about the same as that of her husband: "I noticed that my son-in-law was acting strangely yesterday afternoon
and especially this morning. He tried to get us to leave the room early this morning, and every time I would find that he was watching me
closely. I only left him for a few minutes and it was during this time that he committed suicide. I am satisfied that his object in wanting
us to leave the room was because he did not want us to interfere with his plans for self-destruction."
The deceased is a native of Richmond County, and is about 38 years of age. Mr. T.C. Guthrie, of this city says he knew Brown well, and that
at one time he had been very dissipated.
The cause which led up to the rash deed is not exactly known, but is supposed to have been excessive drinking.
The remains were turned over to Undertaker Harry and will be shipped tonight to his former home in Hamlet, where the funeral will take place
tomorrow.

with my cousin and her daughter. Susan, the daughter told me he wouldn't let them on the property, because Mr. Dan (my uncle) had fixed the
place up for me when I decided to return. Is there anyway that you can help me in this matter. Sincerely, "Edie" Crowe Edith R. Crowe

Death: Feb. 15, 1913
Saint Marys
Camden County
Georgia, USA

Grace Louise Norton Mcintyre, 100, of Saint Marys, GA and formerly Hamlet, NC, died February 15, 2013 after a short illness, preceded
by a long and wonderful life.

She was born in Laurinburg, NC, on February 11, 1913, to Charlie David Norton and Mattie Ellar Brown Norton. She married, the love of
her life, Bernard Leach Mcintyre in Bennettsville, SC and they had two daughters, Dorothy Louise McintyreBaier and Betty Arlen Mcintyre
Currier, all of whom preceded her in death. The Mclntyres raised their family in Ellerbe, NC and later in Portsmouth, VA where Grace worked
for a short time with GE assembling televisions. Retiring to Hamlet, NC, her pastimes included sewing, antique shopping, gardening, painting,
photography, handcrafts and cooking. She was especially well known for her homemade Peanut Brittle which she gave as gifts and was sold by
friends at flea markets and swap meets all over NC. Her greatest passion, however, was gossiping and entertaining with friends and family
around the kitchen table while preparing a mess of butter beans and okra or whatever was in season fresh from her garden. Later in life she
moved to Saint Marys, GA to be near family. She rarely missed an episode of The Price Is Right, became a champion bingo player on the "Senior
Circuit" and last year was named Valentine Queen at SGHS Senior Care Center - Saint Marys.

Survivors include six grandchildren and six great grandchildren from whom she often requested kisses with the phrase "Give Me Some Sugar!"
Celebrating with Grace at her 100th birthday party were all six grandchildren and one great grandchild, Allison Grace Baier, as well as
other family, friends and Buster the Therapy Dog.
