BECK / GRIFFIN posted by E.M. Beck on Saturday, September 16, 2000

I am researching the ancestors and descendants of James T. Beck, born 3/22/1835. Father unknown. Mother was Mary —— Beck (b. abt. 1799, died aft. 1870). James T. had a sister Phebe A. Beck (b. abt. 1836), and probably a brother Merrill P. Beck (b. 1830-1885), and/or an another brother or cousin, James E. Beck (b. abt. 1827, d. aft 1900). James T. first appears by name in the 1850 census living with his mother Mary in Chatham Co. NC. By the 1860 census he was married and living in Moore Co. NC with his wife Martha —— and two children: Adam (b. abt 1858) and Sarah (b. abt. 1859). I believe that he served in Co. H, 26th NC Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He may have had a second daughter Elizabeth T. (b. 1853) who died before 1860. By 1870 he was living in Richmond County and had a new wife, Sarah E.—— (b. abt. 1847), and two additional children: Eleany (b. abt. 1862) and James [C.?] (b. abt. 1864). In the 1880 census he was living in Rockingham township, Richmond Co. and had added three more sons: John (b. abt. 1872), William (b. abt. 1877) and Thomas L. (b. abt. 1879). James T. is not shown in the 1900 census so I assumed he died between 1880 and 1900. His wife Sarah E. Beck was living with their son Thomas in Rockingham township. In 1910 she is shown as living alone in Rockingham, and she is missing from the 1920 census - I assume that she died between 1910 and 1920. I am particularly interested in discovering who James T. Beck's parents were; where he is buried in Richmond County, and if Merrill P. Beck and/or James E. Beck were his brothers or cousins. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Woody Beck

I am a descandant of Eli Quick b. SC ca 1799-1803 and Drucilla Turner Quick b. ca 1815 SC d/o of Moses T. Turner and unknown wife of NC and SC. Eli and Drucilla married in Fayette Co., GA in 1828. Sometime before or around 1826 they migrated to Fayette County, GA, orginally Henry Co., GA. Here they received land lotteries and raised large families. I would like to correspond with any Quick or lateral families. BAGGETT / CHAPLIN / LLOYD / POPE / SHEARING / WILLIAMS posted by L.W. Cates on Saturday, September 23, 2000

I am interested in tracing a rather poor family who lived in Richmond County about the year 1800. On 23 October 1798, Miles Williams wrote his will, leaving all of his estate--consisting of one mare, a bed and furnishings, pewter, water vessels and household furniture--to his son Benjamin Williams. No land is mentioned and, in fact, the deeds of Richmond County don't show any evidence that this man owned any land in the county. He was dead by January Term 1799, when the will was probated. Miles did mention his other children in the will, but each received the nominal sum of five shillings. They were: William Williams, George Williams, Joseph Williams, Elizabeth Shearing, Lucy Baggett, Sary Lloyd, and Phebe Chaplin. The 1790 census of Richmond County shows that a William and Benjamin Williams lived very close to one another in Richmond County. In that same year a Joseph and George Williams lived near to one another in neighboring Robeson County. No Miles Williams appears in the neighborhood at all. The only Miles Williams showing up in that year in N.C. is in Johnston County, and he can be shown to have moved to Wake County, where he remained. I assume that the 1790 census taker either missed Miles, or he is living within someone else's household. I am also having trouble figuring out who the daughters mentioned in the will married. There are Baggetts in Richmond County, but no Lloyds, although there are some in neighboring Anson County. Phebe Chaplin may have married William Chaplin, Jr., who was a resident of Richmond County. His father William Chaplin, Sr., died in 1783, when he was still a minor. He had a brother Samuel Chaplin, who died without issue in 1795, and a sister Sally, who married Sion Bass. The Bass family is frequently thought to be of Amerindian blood. That makes sense, because if I am correct, descendants of Miles Williams' son Joseph married into the Perkins and Turner families of Richmond/Marlboro Counties--also people of mixed blood. The executors named by Miles in his will may also give some clues. They were Benjamin and Micajah Pope. I haven't found evidence of a Benjamin Pope in the near vicinity, but a Micajah Pope, previously from Halifax COunty, NC (1790), did live in Anson County. This family crosses so many borders, it is difficult to place them. If you think you may connect to one of these children or can show which families Miles WIlliams' children married into, please contact me. Also, if you have any information about Miles' place of residence before Richmond County.

BAGGETT / WILLIAMS posted by L.W. Cates on Tuesday, September 26, 2000

Just an update to inform anyone who might find the first message in the future. Today, I learned that Miles Williams, whose will was probated in Richmond County, NC, actually lived at an earlier date in neighboring Robeson (Bladen.) He was not nearly as poor as his will seems to suggest. He purchased land in Bladen (later Robeson) in 1785 from William Moore on Saddletree Swamp. No record of how he disposed of the same (100 acres.) His sons, George and Joseph, purchased land on Raft and Saddletree as well (latter 1780's/early 1790's.) Joseph took out a land grant for 300 acres in partnership with William Bryan, 1787. By 1792/1795, Joseph and George seem to have sold most of their property and although they appear in the 1790 census of Robeson, they are nowhere to be found by 1800. Apparently, they moved away shortly before their father died. A Benjamin Williams continues to appear in Richmond County until 1800. One other thing, Joseph and George Williams' land abutted one another and that of John Baggett, who probably was the husband of their sister Lucy..
