MARTIN
I am looking for the FIRST wife of my John Bethune MARTIN. He was born about 1791 in Moore County, NC, in an area that may have been Bladen or Cumberland County at one time. He married (2nd) Nancy Hill Harris on August 24, 1824 in Montgomery Co. Before his marriage to Nancy Harris, John B. Martin had a son named Atlas Jones Martin, who was born December 22, 1820, North Carolina. Nancy Hill Harris is listed as his mother on all family records, but I do not see that it is possible. John and Nancy had a child soon after they were married and it was not Atlas Jones Martin, so his date of birth is not in question. The marriage date is in our family records and was found in Raleigh at the Archives in published marriages from a NC newspaper.

My John Martin was Clerk of County Court for Montgomery County (at Lawrenceville) in the 1820's and 1830's. His name appears on many documents as Jno. B. Martin, Esq. His brothers were Angus and Farquar Martin. His father was Murdock or Murdoch Martin. They were all involved in government and were friends and neighbors with a gentleman named Atlas Jones. Since John Martin's second marriage was published, I wonder if his first marriage (if they were married) was? If he was married to Atlas Martin's mother, it would have been in 1819 or 1820, I would assume, due to John B. Martin's age. Even then, he would only have been about 18 or 19 years of age.

John was born in America, but his parents were from Skye in Scotland. I'm thinking they would have used whatever "Scottish Naming Patterns" may have been in effect at that time. Why did J.B. Martin name his son Atlas Jones Martin, after Atlas Jones? Was A. J. Martin illegitimate? Was the mother estranged from her family and did she die during childbirth and therefore the child was not named after her father? From what little I have been able to gather, Atlas Jones was in between the age of John Martin and his father, Murdock Martin. I do not believe that my John Bethune Martin's son, Atlas Jones Martin, could have been the grandson of Atlas Jones. I have not ruled out a family connection between the families of John B. Martin and Atlas Jones, however.

I am very interested in burial records from Harmony Presbyterian Church, now Ellerbe Presbyterian Church, in Moore County; Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church, located on the border of Montgomery and Richmond Counties; Longstreet Presbyterian Church; Bensalem Church and the Old Scotch Graveyard in Moore County. These are the locations where most of my ancestors (that I have been able to find) attended church and/or are buried.

I don't expect anyone to produce my missing ancestor, but if any of you can offer hints, tips, suggestions, leads, etc. on how to go about searching for the first wife of John Martin from marriage records, church records, cemetery records, bastardy bonds, etc., I would appreciate ANYTHING!!! Are there census records for Moore and/or Montgomery County for 1820? I spent 2 days in Raleigh almost two years ago and was unable to find her, but it was my first trip to an Archive for genealogy research. If I could ever get back, I might know a little more about what to look for and where!?! Thanks so much for your help. Fredreica  December 20, 2001

CURRIE / STEWART
I am looking for information on the parents and siblings of James Burder CURRIE, b. 11 Oct 1852 in NC; d. 5 April 1925 in Richmond Co, NC. He was married to Catherine L. STEWART (1865-1945). The two children I know about both died very young: J. Croom Currie (1892-1893) and Daniel Currie (1893-1895). Would appreciate any input. Barry K. Hedden  December 12, 2001

CALHOUN / MCINNIS / STEWART
In November 1828 Robeson County, NC, issued a bond for the marriage of Daniel C. CALHOUN and Christian D. MCINNIS. Daniel was born bet. 1790 and 1800, location unknown, and died October 1838 in Richmond County, NC. Christian was born abt 1795, location unknown, and died in April 1858, Richmond County, NC. Daniel and Christian had two daughters. The first was Catherine, who was born abt 1830, Richmond Co, and died childless bet. 1864 and 1866. She married William Patterson. The second was Mary Jane, born August 31, 1832 and died February 15, 1892, Richmond Co, NC. She married Malcolm Bethune STEWART, and they had three children: Anna Jane, Catherine, and Robert L.

The life stories of these individuals are sad ones, filled with many tragedies. I have a great deal of information about the succeeding generations, but have been completely unable to learn anything about the parents or siblings of Daniel C. CALHOUN, Christian D. MCINNIS, or Malcolm Bethune STEWART.

While I mentioned that I do not know the birth locations of Daniel or Christian, I do not believe they were first generation Americans. I am convinced that their parents resided in NC. I also believe that Daniel had a younger brother or cousin named John Calhoun, not to be confused with John C. Calhoun, the SC statesman.

Malcolm served in Co E 38th NC Inf, CSA, and was wounded in the leg at Frayser's Farm, VA in 1862. Malcolm may have had a relative (a brother?) named Alexander Stewart.

If any one can add any information at all, I would be most grateful. Barry K. Hedden  December 10, 2001

McNEILL
Hi! I'm looking for information on a McNEILL family that included five brothers (I think) - John, Neil, Daniel, William, and Hector. I think they also had a sister, Margaret. Their parents were William and Mary Cameron McNeill. William's father was (I believe) named Hector. These five brothers ended up in Hinds County Mississippi (except for Hector who ended up in Meridian, MS). I think they were born in Richmond county, although I think that their father, William, and their grandfather, Hector, were from Scotland. These McNeills were closely entertwined with the Goodwins, and to some extent, the McLaurins and Wrights. I also think they spent some time in Marlborough Co., SC. I think the brother, Daniel, was married to a woman named Nancy. John was married to Virginia Stubbs. Neil was married to Emily W. Goodwin. I don't know about William or Hector. I would appreciate any help or information. Thank you, Danyelle McNeill Fletcher  November 1, 2001

MARSH
Could someone do a lookup for me & tell me if there is a death certificate at the Register of Deeds at Rockingham for Annie Tyler MARSH who is supposed to have died in 1940 in Richmond County,NC. Her husband was Grant MARSH & he died in Chesterfield County,SC in 1934. Grant was buried at Old Brock's Mill Cemetery in Chesterfield County,SC. I hope the death certificate is at Rockingham & I hope it will tell me where she is buried & where she was born & tell me who her parents were. The Marsh Family lived in the Wallace Community of Marlboro County,SC but I can't find much on them in SC so I am guessing they lived soooo close to the State line that a lot of their business was done on the Richmond County,NC side. I hope someone can locate this death certificate & maybe the info on it will lead me in the right direction. Was the Marsh/Tyler name a Richmond County name?? Thanks!!!
