Company D, 23rd Regiment NC Troops, known as PEE DEE GUARD was organized on the 13th of May, 1861, by the election of the following officers: Louis H. Webb, Captain; James S. Knight, 1st Lieut.; John W. Cole, 2nd Lieut.; Benjamin H. Covington, Jr., 2nd Lieut.; William C. Covington, 1st Sergt.; Alexander T. Cole, 2nd Sergt.; William Kennedy, 3rd Sergt.; T. Benson Ledbetter, 1st Corpl.; Henry J. Carr, 2nd Corpl.; William Gibson, 3rd Corpl.;

Henry C. Wall, the writer of "Historical Sketch of the PEE DEE GUARD" gives thanks to several old comrades for information concerning the Company, and particularly to Capt. W. C. Wall, Capt., A. T. Cole and Mr. Parks Chappell, for valuable aid rendered in the progress of the sketch. Rockingham, July 10th, 1876.

"The memorial battle of Bethel, the first pitched battle of the war, was fought on the 10th of June 1861. The Pee Dee Guards was at this time complete in equiptment and ready for service. It is proper to remark that the "Scotch Boys,"commanded by Capt Charles Malloy, preceded us in organization by two days, and left for the seat of war nine days in advance of our company.

We left home on the 27th of June, a day that will ever be remembered by those who were present on the occasion of our departure from Rockingham. How great the enthusiasm of that day! The cause of the South was felt to be the cause of all; controversy was at an end; difference in opinion, as to the principles involved, was swallowed up in the stern reality that forced itself upon the minds of our people; the great heart of the community throbbed in unison of sentiment and feeling, and all parties were ready to contribute of their means, and sympathy to forward and promote the common cause. The Peed Dee Guards was one of the pioneer companies of Richmond County, the second, in point of time, to buckle on the armor, and stand forth in atestation of the "do or die" spirit that animated her people. When, therefore, the hour for the departure came --- when the tearful eyes but stout hearts, that band of gallant boys bade adieu to the scenes of home and friends, the yearning hearts of the people went with them; and as long as Rockingham shall have a "local habitation and a name" will the 27th of June, 1861, be remembered and marked as a melancholy but pleasing episode in her history.

After reaching the railroad a short ride brings us to Laurinburg Depot, where we meet with some lady friends come out to welcome the arrival of the soldiers and to take their leave of former commpanions at school. We lodge tonight in the old Academy and Stewart's Hall--- places made dear to the writer by reminiscences of past school-boy dayd, the one as Alma Mater and the other as boardinghouse. We spend a lively and agreeable night. On the 28th we take an early train for Wilmington, reach there at 10 o'clock, and leave at sunset for Weldon. On the 29th we arrive at "Garysburg camp of Instruction," where we are to enter upon a rigid course of discipline and tactics. Stationed here, a healthful locality, the company progresses finely till infested with that nauseating disease, measles, which removes from our ranks a fellow-soldier --- the first victim of soldier-life. This was John H. Hamer. We are at the camp of instruction something over a month.
