Additional Information:

R P Sanders was Rebecca Peine Carter who had married Romulus Mitchell Saunders on December 27, 1812.

Legend has it that Mrs. Saunders died on the stagecoach and was buried when it stopped at Payne’s Tavern. She is in an aboveground rock crept with imported carved top and set aside from the main cemetery. Additional information below.

See the Romulus Mitchell Saunders page on the Caswell County Historical Association web site for additional information. Also of interest is Longwood the home of Romulus Mitchell Saunders in Milton.

The marriage of Arrena Moore and Stephen Wilkerson was a second marriage for each of them. He is buried in the Stephen Wilkerson Cemetery on Charlie Carr Road near Leas Chapel United Methodist Church..

(A stone such as this one is problamatic for use as proof that the graves are actually present near the stone. Typically a stone such as this one was placed by the family many years after some of the burials occured and portions of the information included may be have based on oral family history. Note that the earliest death shown on this stone was in 1857, the latest in 1930. As an example of the problem here, lacking specific proof, it is unlikely that the body of Portius Aurelius was returned to Person County from Petersburg. This note is included as a caution to researchers.)
