Joshua Lacy Spain, Jr.

Joshua Lacy Spain, Jr., (1829 Beaufort Co. - c1892 Pamlico Co.), son of Joshua Lacy Spain, Sr. (1801-1848) & Sally [unknown]Joshua enlisted as a Private in Beaufort County in Co. B, 17th Infantry Regiment on May 2, 1861 and mustered out on Mar. 26, 1862.  The 17th Regiment saw battle at Fort. Hatteras in Aug. 1861 and at Roanoke Island in Feb. 1862.  It is believed that Joshua may have married twice--with both wives names being Nancy Sawyer.  Hyde County marriages show a J.L. Spain marrying Nancy Sawyer on Aug. 29, 1864 [see this marriage record] and Beaufort County marriages show  that Joshua L. Spain, Jr. married Nancy V. Sawyer on Mar. 22, 1868.  The 1850 Beaufort Co. census shows Joshua & Anne Spain [possibly siblings] living in the home of John & Sally Linton--Sally possibly being Joshua's remarried mother.  Joshua has not been found in the 1860 census. The 1870 Beaufort Co. census shows his wife Nancy being born c1838.  The 1880 Pamlico Co. census shows his wife Nancy being born Dec. 19, 1839 & dying c1895.  If anyone can enlighten us on these 2 marriages or Joshua's whereabouts in 1860 please drop me a line.
