Herman Lee Pate
(1901-1988), son of William Samuel Pate and Mary Luvenia Barnett,
a local boat builder of Hobucken, built his first boat in 1927. He
operated a boat shop at the site where his son, William Rudolph Pate
(1928-1982) built his home. In 1940, he moved the business to the
Intracoastal Waterway between the U.S. Coast Guard Station and James
Potter’s Garage. He and his son continued to build boats and operate
a railway until 1954 when he moved the business to a site located at the
intersection of Hwy 304 and Lowland Road (SR 1230), which later became the
Hobucken Marina (lower picture taken in 1976).
