COLEMAN

My brick wall is James Coleman I.  His son, James II, reported in the 1880 census that his father, James Coleman I, was born in Ireland.  James I was married to Nancy Ann ___, born in North Carolina 9 Sep 1770.  I was able to determine her birth date from cemetery and church records in Knoxville, TN.  James II, the son, was born 22 Oct 1799, reportedly in Orange County, NC.  It seems he also had a sister, Isabella Coleman (Looney), born 18 Mar 1804 in NC.  The family migrated to Knoxville, TN in 1805, but there is no sign of them there until the marriage of James II to Sarah Hicky, 23 Sep 1820, in Knoxville.  There are no records of the father ever having been in North Carolina or Knoxville, except information from James II that he and hs father arrived in Knoxville in 1805.   Linda Coleman

WILLIAMS

My Orange County brick wall is the Williams family.  My g-g-g-grandfather, Humphrey Moody Williams was born September 15, 1816 in Hillsboro, NC.  He married Lucinda Arbell Lunceford on June 28, 1838 in Franklin County, NC, then migrated to Tennessee (around 1851), then to Missouri after the war.  He had a brother, Josiah, who it looks like married Lucinda's sister, Dialphia, a few years earlier.  I haven't been able to find anything about Humphrey's parents or what happened to his brother and his wife.  I don't know if the Luncefords were from Orange County or Franklin County, so that is another brick wall that I have hit.  I would appreciate any assistance with these two family lines.  Thanks.

CAREY/CASH

Elijah Carey, b. 1798, NC; d. June, 1879, Hempstead County, AR; married before 1818 in Orange County, NC to Elizabeth Cash, b. NC; d. after 1841 in Hempstead County, AR.  Known children of Elijah Carey and Elizabeth Cash:
  1. John Caleb Carey, b. 11/7/1818, NC; d. 1/12/1893, Johnson County, AR.  John was in Johnson County, AR about 1841.
  2.  Green Carey, b. 1824, TN; d. 1893
  3.  Milly Emily Carey, b. 1826, Henderson County, TN; d. before 1899, Hempstead County, AR
  4.  Francis Carey, b. 1828, TN
  5.  Elijah Carey, Jr., b. 1841, TN
Elijah Carey is said to have been married 5 times.  Elizabeth Cash is the only wife that I have information on.  Elijah moved his family to TN before the birth of their 2nd child in 1824.  He moved his family to Hempstead County, AR in the early 1850's.  There were probably more children born to Elijah and Elizabeth between 1828 and 1841.  I know that Elizabeth died some time after the move to AR.

ROSS

I am seeking information on Andrew Ross, my ggg-grandfather, where he was born, birth date, information on his parents and where he is buried.  He was a blacksmith in Hillsborough in 1786.  I found the account of his property in Raleigh.  He had three children:  Thomas (who married, first, a Mrs. Stewart and, later, Sarah Armstrong), Catherine (who married Will Kerr) and Nancy (who maarried James Kerr).  They family tradition is that Andrew born in Scotland, but some Salt Lake City researchers suggest that he was born in Hillsborough.
Joseph Curray

TAYLOR

My 3rd-g-grandfather was John Taylor, b. 13 Sept 1782, in Hillsborough; d. 3 Sept 1842, Cass Co., IL.  He married Barbara Beason, who was also born in Hillsborough, 7 Mar 1788.  They were married in Sumner County, TN on 28 May 1806.  The 1810 census shows a John Taylor, a Robert Taylor and a Henry Beason in Hillsborough.  I'm trying to find the father and mother of John Taylor.  I would appreciate any help.

BRYAN/BRYANT - NEELY/NEELEY

We are trying to find the parents of James Bryan(t) who married Elizabeth Neely (Neeley), daughter of John Neely, in Orange County in 1798.  There was a James Bryan, of the Morgan Bryan line, that was in Rowan County at the same time that our James was in Orange County, but no connection has been found to him.  James and Elizabeth moved to Lincoln County, TN in the early 1800's.  They had the following children:  Thomas, Eleanor, Mary Tate.  Any help would be appreciated.

WHITMORE

I believe but have no proof that my first Whitmore of the US was William and I have found an Apprentices of VA entry for a William Whitmore beginning 10/02/1795 apprenticed to John Banks, a tailor.  The father of William is listed as William (deceased).  I believe that a William enlisted for the Revolutionary War from VA.  As early as the 1790 census, I find Whitmores in Orange Co., VA:
Charles born Greenville, VA, 1784; in Orange Co., NC, where he is found from 1790 - 1830; applied for Rev. War pension in 1832-33 in Gilmer Co., GA.
Jesse born abt 1770-75 in Greenville, VA is also found in the 1790 census; I believe my ancestor is Jesse, who moved in Rhea Co., TN showing in the 1830 census.  There is a NC marriage bond for Jesse and Sarah Murphy for 12/06/1795; I think they were married in Orange Co., NC, then moved to Rhea Co., TN before 1811, when their first child was born.
Howell born 3/23/1811, Meigs Co., TN (admoins Rhea Co.); Howell married in 1830 to Nancy Gamble.  They lived there all their lives.  My mother was Eunice Agnes Whitmore, descended from Howell.  Any help to determine the lineage of these Howells would be much appreciated.

TURNER / AGNEW

I am searching for Robert Turner, whose will was probated in 1800 in Orange County.  The will listed his wife as Mary.  His daughter, Elizabeth, was the wife of John Agnew, who was named executor, along with Mary.  I would appreciate any help with this family.
Ruth Hunt

COMPTON

I am looking for the spouse of Edward Clyde Compton, Sr.  I know her first name was either Nannie or Etta and I suspect that her legal name may have been Nanette, since this is a family name.  I need to know what her maiden name was.  Death records show she was born July 29, 1891, however, census records show her birth anywhere between 1891-1895.  She died October 2, 1969 and is buried with her husband in Eno Presbyterian Cemetery.  If anyone can tell me what her maiden name was, I would greatly appreciate it.

McMULLIN

My family surname in Orange County is McMullin.  Furthest back I've found in one line is Samuel McMullin, about 1736, husband of Agnes/Ann McVey or McVan (born in Delaware).  Record shows he was born in Orange County and buried at "Cane Creek settlement" in 1802.  I know that his children were born in Orange County.  Many other McMullins in my line are also shown as being born in Orange County from mid-1700s - 1800s, and married members of the Woody and Netherton families.  In addition to any info about the McMullin family, I'm looking for any proof of Samuel McMullin's possible birth in or migration to Orange County, or info on his parents, James McMullin, about 1706, and Mary MacDonald, about 1716, who I believe may have been the first of the family to move there.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

SUTHERLAND / SOUTHERLAND

Mordecai Sutherland lived in Orange County until his death in 1818.  There was another Mordecai recorded as living in Orange County about the same time.  I have information that Mordecai left a plantation to his son, Samuel, but, so far, I've been unable to get dates and names of his children and where the plantation was.  Also, Mordecai was related to Col. Ransom Sutherland of Orange, Granville and Wake Counties.  Am not sure how they were related.  I appreciate any help anyone can give me.

LARIMORE

My g-g-g-grandfather, Samuel Hillary Larimore, lived in Orange County and, at one time, lived in Moore County, NC.  He was married to Mary Forsythe.  Samuel was born in 1730 and Mary was born about 1732.  They came to Orange County  from either  Ireland or South Carolina.  I've been told that he was in the Revolutionary War and that he died young and Mary remarried.  His will was probated in Guilford County, NC in May of 1774.  He may have had two sons, names, James and Hugh, and four younger children.  James Larimore was my g-g-grandfather.  I would appreciate any help on this family.

PYLE / LIVINGSTON

My g-g-g-grandfather was Joel Pyle (Pile) born about 1810 in North Carolina.  He married Mary Ann Livingston in 1840 in Dearborn, Indiana.  I have traced him from Frankfort, Kentucky in 1830, Dearborn, Indiana in 1840, Carroll, Missouri in 1850.  It was suggested that his father was William Pyle of Orange County, NC.  His grandfather was James Pyle, also, of Orange County.  I have a will for James that mentions William, but I need his will that mentions Joel Pyle as his son. Any help would be appreciated.  I have a 1,000 page book on the Pyle-Pile family, if I can look up for anyone.

Jenenah O'Neal Smith

PARRISH / CARRINGTON

I am looking for the parents of John "Henderson" Parrish who married Ruth Ann Carrington in Orange Co.  I find a lot of information on the Carringtons, but not much on the Parrish family.  Many of the Parrish's were in Person Co., NC.  Ruth Ann Carrington was born in 1811 in Orange County, NC.  Her parents were Nathaniel Carrington and Anna Davis.  Ruth Ann married Henderson Parrish on 13 Sept 1831.  It is thought that Henderson's father was William?  Any help would be appreciated.

WHITSETT

I am looking for the family of Henry Patterson Whitsett, born near Graham, NC in 1831.  On some of his Civil War records, he stated that he was born in Orange County, near Graham.  He left NC as a very young man and settled in Alabama shortly before 1850. After his migration to Alabama, I've been able to find lots of information on him, but I desperately need information on his parents.  I would appreciate even the slightest clue.

HAMILTON/McCULLEY/McCULLOUGH

I am descended from William Hamilton and Sarah McCulley who married in Orange Co., NC in 1817 and moved their family to Orange Co., IN in 1838.  Their Orange Co., NC marriage bond was signed by Archibald Hamilton.  It has been suggested to me that the two men were brothers.  The children of William and Sarah (McCulley) Hamilton, born 1818 - 1837, were Mary Adeline, Kirk, Albert B.,  Joseph A., Martha P., Andrew M., Lula Almeda, James, Julia A., possibly Frances, Caroline Cornelius, Sarah Mariah, Margaret Elizabeth.  I am looking for the parents of both William Hamilton and Sarah McCulley/McCullough.  If anyone knows anything about the marriage of Joseph Hamilton and Martha Whitside (Whitsett) in 1781, I'm curious about them as well.    Katie Thrust

THOMPSON

Need information on Robert Thompson, b. 1757 probably Orange Co., NC d. 1830. Married Ruth McQuiston of Rowan Co., NC. Robert Thompson supposedly was of Alamance 1771. Robert Sr., I think was married to Letitia Hazard about 1751. I believe that Robert Sr. received Granville grants in Orange and Rowan Counties of land that later became Guilford County.
Need to find a marriage record (abt. 1777) for Robert Jr. and Ruth and any information regarding his service in the American Revolution. I believe that he fought in the Battle of Guilford Court House.
Any help appreciated. Thank you.

LONG

My brick wall has existed since about 1989. My 5th generation great grandfather is Conrad Long. He came from Germany to Pennsylvania and arrived in North Carolina in about 1762. A book on the history of Alamance Co. written in about 1909, by Miss SW Stockard (a very popular Orange/Alamance Co. name) suggested that a "Conrad Langue" settled Haw River in 1762. I am certain this is Conrad Long. His children, Casper, Conrad, Jacob and Henry have not been too difficult to find information on, but anything regrding Conrad is difficult. He was buried in Old Stoner's cemetery in 1796. Don't know if those markers or gravestones still exist, but any help on this line would be so appreciated. I am also happy to help anyone needing information on these sons and their descendants. Incidentally, Conrad had two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary of which I have found absolutely nothing. Any information is appreciated.  Thanks.

Clark/Lindsay

Beverly Carr Stanley sent info to the “Orange County Brick Walls”
requesting info on NC families.  I am particularly interested in the Clark and Lindsay connections.  I believe that I am a descendant of Jesse Clark and Martha Lindsay who married in 1792 in Orange CO.  I have a copy of their marriage bond but have no documentation they are the couple for whom I am searching.  Both Jesse and Martha were born in NC.  Their son was named Eli Lindsay Clark, one of their granddaughters was named Martha Lindsay Vincent, and one of Eli’s daughters was named Martha Lindsay Clark.  Jesse and Martha left NC around 1800 and moved to Rutherford, TN.  From TN they and most of their children with families moved to Parke CO IN about 1828. A William Lindsay and family in 1840 lived close to the Clarks in Parke CO IN but disappeared from the census after that.  A James Lindsay signed the marriage bond with Jesse Clark. I do not know the names of parents of Jesse or Martha. How can I know for certain that the Jesse and Martha from Orange CO are “my” Jesse and Martha and how can I get in touch with Beverly Carr Stanley Salem, NJ?  Any help with the Clark and Lindsay families would be appreciated.

MARTIN

My brick wall is finding a link from Orange Co NC to Hickman Co TN.  George Martin (B1718 PA-D1800NC) married Sarah Dixon(B1720 NC).  His father Moses Martin (1686-1739) a PA Quaker was the son of Thomas Martin(1648-1714).
Armstead Martin was born in Hickman Co TN in 1807, I show his father as George Martin B 1770 or 1776 in NC.  Is this George Martin the son or grandson of G Martin married to Sarah Dixon?

MCCullough/Robinson

I am researching 3 names that originated in Orange Co., NC:  Falls, McCullough, and Robinson.  These families married into each and seemed to travel from Orange Co., to Lincoln and Gaston Cos., and and then to York Co., SC.  Robert McCullough served the Orange Co. militia during Revolutionary War and, according to LDS records there is a pension record (which I have been unable to obtain from National Archives).  His son David McCullough married Cynthia Falls in Lincoln Co. 21 Mar 1821, and their daughter Sarah Rosanna married John W. Robinson in Lincoln Co.,18  Jan 1847.  John W. Robinson's father was named either John or Thomas (probably John) but I know nothing of him. John W.'s mother was Nancy Serena (maiden name unknown).  About 1850, John and Rosanna Robinson, his mother and brother James Harvey, and Rosanna's brother Marion McCullough (and possibly others) traveled to Carroll Co., AR and homesteaded land.
The Falls family has been thoroughly researched by Agnes Yount  of LaVale, MD., and there has been a good deal of research on the McCullough name, but I have been unable to find any trace of the forebears of John W. and Nancy Serena Robinson.

Melton

I'm trying to determine who the parents were for an ancestor:  Elijah Melton, DOB 8/2/1773.  He was born in Orange, NC, but I've not been able to determine who his parents were.  Was his father Nathaniel or Jeremiah Melton or, perhaps, someone else?
