| CLARK, CARR, KERR, LINDSEY, MOTHERAL Need info on family of James & Grace Thompson Clark, who had 3 children to marry children of Jane Kerr m. Eli Lindsey, Orange Co., NC. Also, who is James Clark m. Ann Kerr, sister of above Jane? They had sister, Sarah m. Joseph Motheral, who lived 1817, Williamson Co., TN. I need info on their brothers, Wm. & John, who I will call "lost." Did they have families and come to Cane Creek in TN as the Lindsey descendants did? Or did they die and their children were brought into TN? Beverly Carr Stanley, Salem, NJ CAR, CARR, KERR, LINDSEY, ELLIS, ELLISON/ALLISON, CAMPBELL One Wm. CAR appears 1849 Jackson Co. case where he is dec'd and represented by John W. CAR, admin & heirs of Wm. vs. Elijah CAR (b1799) & Archibald Lindsey. Clerk, 1906 JP) Neither Wm. to be confused w/ Wm. Carr b1788 m. Rice/Harper whose son Elijah b1825/6 was living KY 1850. | THOMPSON I have a brick wall in Hillsborough that I have tried to get through for some time. Samuel Thompson came to Hillsborough, NC prior to August 1786 as one of three land grants was applied for on the Eno RIver on that date. There are census records for Samuel in Orange County for the years 1800, 1810 and 1820. He was married to Isabella and they had 5 children reportedly born in Orange County: Eleanor b abt 1777, Frances b abt 1780, Phoebe b 1782, Hannah b 1783 and richard b 1786. Eleanor married John Barton; Phoebe married James Clancey; and Richard married (1) Edith Nunn and (2) Nancy King. Frances and Hannah never married. Samuel died in 1829 (from his will and probate) and Isabella died 23 December 1840 (from an obituary in the Hillsborough Recorder). The homeplace with house and barn were on the Eno, just across from Hillsborough bordering on SR-86 across the bridge. Frances and Hannah lived there until their deaths (1869 and 1859, respectively) at which time the property there was deeded to the freed slaves. Richard's oldest son, Walter, lived in and around Hillsborough until his death in September 1888. He was a veteran of the Mexican War and is buried there in Hillsborough with headstone. Now, the brick wall is Samuel Thompson's ancestry, his former place of residence, and even Isabella's maiden name. Despite years of research I have found no link that would show where Samuel came from. Any help on this family would be greatly appreciated. Ron Thompson |
PENDERGRASS / BLACKWOOD My grandmother was Mary Lucy Pendergrass. She married my grandfather, Algernon "Dock" Seaton Blackwood on 12 March 1898 in Durham County. Their home was just south of Chapel Hill in Orange County. I have been unable to identify the father of Mary Lucy Pendergrass. The actual Marriage Certificate was not in the Durham County Files< however< the index indicates that the license was obtained 10 February 1898 in Durham Co. The groom was 23 and the bride 20. The ceremony was performed by Justice of the Peace R. J. Emerson on 12 March 1898. Witnesses were Ed Blackwood, T. R. Daniel and Julia Emerson. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Nat Blackwood
BREWER / LOYD My brick wall for Orange Co., NC is Newit/Newt Brewer who married Caty Loyd, April 28, 1786 in Orange Co., NC There was a Newit Brewer who married Elizabeth Nicholson August 27 1792 in Brunswick Co., VA, but I do not think these two men are the same due to birthdates of two of the children of Newit Brewer and Caty Loyd (Charlotte Brewer Lloyd b ca 1793 and William Monroe Brewer b ca 1796 in Orange Co., NC. Any information on this family would be appreciated. Charlotte
KETCHUM Edward Ketchum is my brick wall. There was a Ketchum family, Martha (Mary?) and Edward Ketchum, on the 1779 Tax List in Orange Co. My Edward Ketchum married Mary Reasor in Lee Co., VA in about 1791, but could have been married earlier. Searching for any information about this Edward, or children (David, Joseph, Peter Reasor, Jacob, Christopher, Christina, Elizabeth, Luther Henderson, Catherine). Berry Spradley

REID Does anyone know about this John Reed/Reid, who married Elizabeth Tate in Orange County in 1787? There was a James Tate connected to my Elizabeth Tate. I believe that Eliza and John Reid (b. 1803 in Wake County. NC). I have Elizabet Tate was the dau. of George Tate and his wife, Jennet. Don't know if their info is entirely correct: George Tate, b. 1730, Scotland; d. 1774, Orange County. Children of George and Jennet: James; Agnes; Mary; Elizabeth; George; Lettice; Jennet; Margaret; Beatrice. Betty Pace
JACKSON I am looking for a Mabane Jackson, who was born abt. 1813, NC. He married Sarah Dew, born abt. 1820, NC. They married in 1842 in Orange Count. Mabane has been spelled a variety of ways: maben, mabon, mebane, mabane, mabine. Sarah's parents were of German descent and didn't speak much English. If anyone knows of any info on the Jacksons or the Dews, please writ to me. Jody Stackhouse
RILEY My Orange County brick wall is my 3rd great-grandfather, Sanders Riley. I have only been able to track Sanders to 1828, when he married Martha Thompson, daughter of John and Esther Hastings Thompson. In the 1850 census, Sanders is listed as 53 years old, which would put his birth year between 1796 and 1797. From another Orange County researcher I learned there were many marriages between the Riley and Thompson families of Orange County. Sanders and Martha Thompson Riley's children from oldest to youngest were William H., Mary Ann, John Lynch, Sanders C., Walter Norwood, Martha E. and Porter Allen. The old naming principle holds true with two of their sons. First son named for father's father, William H (?); second son named for mother's father, John; third son named for father, Sanders C.; fourth son, Walter Norwood---I was able to find a Norwood Riley, son of William Riley. I ordered this William Riley's, but there was no reference to Sanders. Fifth son. Porter Allen, named for Martha Thompson's youngest brother, Porter Thompson. Her oldest brother was William Thompson, so I'm not sure if William H. Riley was named for Sanders Riley's father or Martha Thompson Riley's oldest brother. If anyone has information on this family or has any ideas on how I should proceed, I would love to hear from you. Diana
Jean/Gean/Kirk/Cate/Yarbrough Willaim John and Mary Jean were orphaned in Orange County, 1790. William and John (Bird?) were taken to Orange County with Lewis Kirk. Cannot find records of Lewis Kirk going into court to have the boys "bound" to him. We are searching for information on who their parents were. Court records might show that. The Chatham Records do not. William married Patsy Yarbrough, Orange County; Bird married Mourning Cate. Any information on these families would be helpful. Renee Newman
HUNDLEY I am researching the family of Julius and Della Hundley. Known children are James Harold (Carrborro), Sam E. (Route 3, Chapel Hill) and Ruthie Mabel, 1907-1988 (who was the youngest of 13 children). I am trying to help re-unite a WWII soldier's Bible with the family. If you know of a member of this family, please get in touch with me. Sandy Reid
DUKE/S-PARKER My two Orange County brick walls are Henry Duke and Pharaby (in all its various spellings) Parker in 1802. I haven't been able to find parents of either or siblings of Henry. Pharaby had a sister, Rebecca, and perhaps a brother, Allen. They later went to Jefferson County, TN. Related families are Elmore and Farmer. I believe that both families came from the Isle of Wight VA, but have no real proof. Judy Dukes
SHIRLEY A document concerning Thomas and Margaret Shirley's power of attorney to their son, Thomas Shirley, Jr., is in Marion County, TN deedbook, 1819-1835. It says, in part, ".....any legacies, which may be due, owing or coming.......from any person or estate in the counties of Guilford and Orange in the State of North Carolina." I would be grateful to anyone who can find court records in Guilford or Orange County, wherein Thomas Shirley, Jr. represented the interests of his parents. Raymond Shirley, Jr.
PAYNE/PAINE I'm looking for information regarding Jessie Payne and family; he married Frankie French Robertson in Orange or Caswell County, ca. 1795-1820. They appear in 1820 Federal census in TN. They were connected with the Primitive Baptist Church. Frankie could have been called Francis/Frankie/Frenchie; she was ten years older than Jessie and could have been first married to a man named Roberson. Jessie and Frankie are buried in IL. Jessie's son was Lewis Griffin Payne, the g-grandfather of Herb Payne, for whom I am researching this family. Any help would be gratefully received. Diane
CARRINGTON/KNIGHT Looking for the father of Mary Carrington, who married John Knight in 1792. Any help appreciated. Jacquie
WOODS My gggg-grandfather was William Woods, who was last found living in Bedford Co., TN in 1850. William was born in NC in 1786; wife was Rachel, possibly daughter of James Faucett; she was born in NC in 1792. I have reason to believe William and Rachel were from Orange County. There is a possibility that William was thw son of Joseph Woods and his mother may have been Phoebe Clark. There was a John Woods in the family who we believe to be the son of Hugh Mary Dunnagen Woods of Orange County. I'm looking for anyone who might be able to shed some more light on this family. Michael Woods
