Thirty-Seventh Regt. U.S.C. Infantry

HISTORY OF COMPANY "A"

This Company was mustered into United States service January 30th, 1864, at the entrenched camp, near Norfolk, Virginia, as Company A, 3d North Carolina Colored Volunteers, of General WILD'S African Brigade.

The Company, since its organization, has been commanded by Captain Constantin NITZSCHE, who was brevetted major for gallant and meritorious services in the field. Owing to the strict discipline observed by the officers in command of the Company, several desertions have occurred. It may be mentioned, and with credit to this Company, that only three of its members have been tried by court martial since its muster in - Privates Kage Heath, Thomas B.N. Fitzpatrick, and Richard Merrick; the latter was acquitted.

On the 27th day of March [1866] the Company was removed to Smithville, North Carolina, (Fort Johnson) relieving Company H, of this regiment.

Commissioned Officers

Costantin NITZSCHE - Captain and Brevet Major. Served eight years as commissioned officer in regular service.

Samuel E. DAY - First Lieutenant. Promoted Captain and transferred to Company G.

James A. MONROE - Second Lieutenant. Promoted First Lieutenant for distinguished bravery and gallantry in the field, and transferred to Company D.

John L. RHOADES - Second Lieutenant. Promoted First Lieutenant. Appointed Adjuntant 37th U.S.C.I., June 5th, 1866; formerly Adjutant 2d Pennsylvania Reserves.

Hillery HARRING - First Sergeant. Appointed February 1, 1864. Promoted First Sergeant, May 1, 1866.
