America's Youngest Vietnam Casualty: Dan Bullock, USMC

DAN BULLOCK was born December 21, 1953 in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina. He lived there until he was 11 years old, when his mother died, at which time, he and his sister went to live with their father and his family in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York. When he was 14 years old, he altered the date on his birth certificate to show that he was born in 1949, rather than in 1953. He enlisted in the Marines in September 1968 using the altered birth certificate, and was assigned to Platoon 3039 in Parris Island, South Carolina for training and graduated from boot camp in December 1968.  The young man was sent to Vietnam in May 1969, where he served as a rifleman in the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On June 7, 1969, at age 15, he was instantly killed during a North Vietnamese army attack while he was on watch at night. He was the youngest of the war's 58,000 American casualties.

Dan Bullock is buried at Elmwood Cemetery, in Goldsboro.

In 2003, a section of Lee Avenue in Brooklyn was renamed in his honor.  On Memorial Day, May 29, 2017, the city of Goldsboro recognized Dan Bullock with a historical marker and a road named in his honor.
