I am beginning research on my paternal grandfather's line. I seem to have
a difficult time getting started. His name was LOGAN WILLIAMS HALL and
grew up in the "Knapp of reeds" area and owned quite a bit of land in what
is now known as "BUTNER", which was taken from him in large part from the
government During the war. The "UMSTEAD STATE HOSPITAL", which was named
for an uncle now sits on part of that land. He became a mail carrier and
moved to STEM around 1915 or so and about that same time married my
grandmother Sallie Batts from Wilson County. He had two sisters ELLA and
LESSIE who also lived out their lives in STEM and never married. He had
two children Mary and Lassiter. I would appreciate any clues as to where
the line goes back from "KNAPP OF REEDS" back.

John moved to Tn. along with his brothers Andrew and Barnett but have been

OWEN(S), WOOD(S) I'm searching for information on WILLIAM J. OWEN(S) b
about 1827 NC (possibly Granville Co.). He served in 8th Reg't, Co. D, NC
Troops, and died 21 Jan 1863. I'm trying to find anything I can about his
family. I don't know his parent's names. He married Sallie Ann WOOD(S) 11
Mar 1848 in Granville Co. Their 4 children were SUSAN, MARTHA, CARRIE
HEPSIBAH, and WILLIE (female). A JOHN OWEN listed with them in 1860 may
have been a son but apparently he died by 1870. In 1850 they were in the
Fishing Creek District. In 1860 they were living in Knap of Reeds District
with the post office listed as Wallers. In 1870 they lived in the Tally Ho
district. Seems as Owen was a large name at one time but don't know how
these are connected or where their family may be buried. I know this
family apparently weren't educated as none of them knew how to read or
write. Any help in locating any leads to find information on them (church
records, cemetary, etc.) is very much appreciated.

I am researching the name of LT ANTHONY METCALF b. in VA approx. 1720-30.
His militia "mustering out" record (which I have a copy of) shows that he
was discharged in 1754 in Granville Co. (Vol. XXII, T.P., pp 370,372,373
of the Colonial and State Records of NC.) He served under the command of
Col. William Eaton and Captain Richard Coleman's Company. I can't find a
copy of his Rev. War papers, tho. In Vol. IX, p 119, f.1; Anthony
Metcalfe, Entry #28 (Rev. Army Accounts) shows he was paid 10 pounds by
David Miller (Bundle no. 8. He did serve in the Rev. War (because I have a
copy of his youngest son, William, who states in his pension application
that his father was dead at the time of the application, also one brother,
and that the other two were still in NC (Rutherford Co.). His known sons
names were Warner, Danza and William. My ancestor which I am trying to
hook to Lt. Anthony is Anthony Martin b. Rutherford Co. NC who moved to AR
in 1838 and had 12 children here - I live in Ft. Smith, AR. Anthony
Martin's children were: William Metcalf b. 1764 in VA Warner b. 1790 Wm

Lewis b. 1806 Thompson b. 1809 John b. 1812 Dancy (Danza b. 1815. Possibly
one named Isaac. Anthony Martin's family have been closely associated w/Thomasson

There is a Solomon Walker who owned land in Granville Co, in 1788. He left
will in Granville Co dated Aug 16, 1790 in which he mentions his wife,
Martha Walker, and son John Walker. There was a John C. Peek mentioned as
serving in the Dutch District as a Justice of Granville Co Court. Does
anyone know of a marriage connection between these two or related
families? I am seeking parents of Solomon Walker Peek, Sr b Surry Co, NC
1771 supposedly to William Peek and Elizabeth Shockley, but the marriage
year I was given by another researcher for this couple is 1776. Could
Solomon Walker Peek be son of William Peek and a first wife? Or the son of
a different Peek? Would appreciate any info regarding a Peek, Walker, or
Shockley connection in Granville or Surry Co, NC.

I am looking for information on the WEST and the FIKE families in
Granville County. Specifically, I am searching for the following names:
James WEST b. 1756, William WEST b. 1758, Leonard WEST b. 1760 or 1762 d.
1842, Agnes WEST b. 1762, Richard WEST, b. 1764, and Amos WEST. This
Leonard West was definitely born in Granville County, and it is believed
the older siblings, except for Amos, were born there as well. Amos West
was born in Greensprings, Louisa County, Virginia. I am trying to
determine who his parents were, but I am having little success with this.
The extent of my knowledge is that the father was an Unknown West man and
an Isabel_________? This Isabel was believed to be a member of a wealthy
and aristocratic family. The parents of Amos and Leonard died young, and
they and their siblings were raised by the John and Lucy FIKE family of
Granville County and Orange County, North Carolina. Leonard married Phoebe
MORGAN of Surry County, North Carolina and then moved to the Sumner
County, Tennessee area. His children were Amos West, William West, Settle
West, and Fielding West. Amos married Frances HERNDON of Chatham County,
North Carolina. They too moved to Sumner County, TN and eventually Logan
County, KY. Amos and Frances' children are as follows: Isabella West,
Polly West, Agnes West, James West, Leonard West, and Richard West b. 1806
d. 1841. If you have information on these people, please email me, Ben
West. My address is bmwest@usit.net
