Notes On Poll Taxes:

 

White men under 21 and, beginning in 1801, over the age of 50 were exempted from poll taxes.  Beginning in 1817 this upper limit was lowered to 45.   Ages can thus be calculated based on this formula.  Tax lists are often incomplete as comparisons with census shows.
