 Granville Stars

Company I  

23rd Regiment

 

 

This company known as the “Granville Stars “ was raised in Granville County and enlisted at Oak Hill on June 17, 1861. It was then mustered Into state service and assigned to this regiment as Company I. After joining the regiment the company functioned as a part of the regiment, and its history for the war period is reported as a part of the regimental history.

 

The information contained in the following roster of the company was compiled principally from company muster rolls for January-December, 1864. No company under muster roll were found for June—December, 1861: March, 1862-December. 1863

 

 

 

Officers

Captains

 

Amis, Robert

 

Resided in Granville County. Appointed Captain on June 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until he resigned on January 28, 1862. by reason of a “ varicose condition of the veins.”

 

 

Baskeville, George Thomas

 

Born in Mecklenburg county, Virginia, and resided in Granville county prior to enlisting at age 34. Elected Captain on May 10, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Wounded at Gettsyburg, Pennyslvania, July 1, 1863.

Died at Gettsyburg on July 2, 1863, of wounds. “Captain Baskerville was of the highest type of Southern Gentlemen. He was a devout Christian, a good neighbor, and a devoted husband. …. His… Wife…., crushed at the tidings of his death, took to her bed and never rose again.”

 

 

Lieutenants

 

Carrington, Thomas R.  –3rd Lieutenant

 

Resided in Granville county and enlisted at age of 24. accounted for until either defeated for reelection or killed on or about May 10, 1862.

 

Gregory, Nathaniel A.,-1st Lieutenant

 

Born in Granville County and enlisted at age 18. Appointed 1st Lieutenant on June 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the arm at Chancellorsville, Virginia. May 3, 1863. Resigned on November 25, 1863, by reason of “contractions of the fingers (and) deformity of the hand” as a result of wounds received at Chancellorsville. Later served as Captain of Company H, 1st regiment NC. Junior Reserves.

 

Knott, James D.-1st Lieutenant

 

Resided  in Granville county and enlisted at age 24, June 17, 1861. Mustered in a as a Private and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on November 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right leg at Gettsyburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on or about April 10, 1864, while absent wounded. Reported absent wounded through December, 1864.

 

 

Sims, William B. –2nd Lieutenant

 

Resided in Granville County and enlisted at age 35, February 28, 2862. Mustered in as Private and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on May 20, 1862. Present or accounted for until he resigned on August 15, 1862.

Adcock, Robert, Private

 

Resided in Granville county and enlisted at Union Mills at age 37, June 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863.

 

Amis, W. J.-Sergeant

 

Resided in Granville County and enlisted at Camp Hill at age 19, June 17, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant Roll of Honor indicates he was killed at Seven Pines, Virginia, May 31, 1862, however, regimental records indicate he died October, 1862, of wounds received on (September) 17, 1862. No further records.

 

Bailey, H. I,- Private

 

Resided in Granville county and enlisted at age 21, June 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until he deserted on June 8, 1863.

 

Baily, John Henry-Private

 

Resided in Granville County where he enlisted on June 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until court-martialed on or about February 9, 1863.  Reason he was court-martialed not reported. Returned for duty prior to March 1, 1863. Present and accounted for until captured at Madison Court House, Virginia, December 13, 1863. Confined at old Capitol Prison, Washington, D. c. until released on March 22, 1864, after taking the Oath of Amnesty.

 

 

Beal, J. W.-Private

 

Resided  in Granville County where he enlisted at age 39, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the back, leg, and head at Seven Pines, Virginia, May 31, 1862. Returned to duty prior to June 27, 1862,

when he was wounded at Gaines' Mill, Virginia. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Captured at or near Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Confined at Washington, D.C., until paroled and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was received May 13, 1863, for exchange. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, when he was captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, October 15-18, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout, May 3, 1864, and transferred to Aiken's landing, James River, Virginia, where he was received May 8, 1864, for exchange. Furloughed for sixty days on November 7, 1864. No further records.

 

 

Beasley, Stephen H. –Private

 

 Resided in Granville County where he enlisted at age 27, June 17, 1861. Mustered in as Private and was promoted to Corporal on January 8, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the hip and groin at Chancellorville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Detailed for hospital duty on January 6, 1864. Reduced to ranks on July 1, 1864. Detailed for duty as an ambulance driver on September 20, 1864. Reported absent on detail through December, 1864. paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

 

Beasley, W. T.-Private

 

Born in Granville County where he resided prior to enlisting in Granville County at the age of 19, June 17, 1861. present or accounted for until he died “at home on October 29, 1862. Cause of death not reported.

 

Berkley, John B. -Private

 

Born in Granville County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Granville County at age 40, June 17, 1861. present and accounted for until he died May 7 or May 17, 1862 o " typhoid fever " Place of death not reported. 

 

 

Blackwell, James- Private

 

Resided in Granville county where he enlisted at age 21, June 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylania, July 1-3 1863. confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, October 15-18, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on February 18, 1865 and transferred to Boulware's and Cox's wharves, James river, Virginia, Where he was received February 20-21, 1865 for exchange. 

 

Blackwell, Robert-Private

 

Resided in Granville county where he enlisted at age 25, June 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Gettsyburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863. 

 

Blanks, J. R.- Corporal

 

Born In Halifax county, Virginia, and resided in Granville county where he was by occupation a miller prior to enlisting in Granville county at age 28, June 17, 1861. Mustered in as Corporal. Present or accounted for until discharged on January 17, 1862 by reason of " incapacity for military service." 

 

Briggs, H. L.-Private

 

Resided in Granville county where he enlisted at age 25, June 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862.
