The expanded, new edition of Nash surnames adds those for the signers of the 1777 petition to the North Carolina General Assembly to create Nash County out of western Edgecombe County, NC and the 1782 Tax List for the county.
These postings, in alphabetical order, list all the surnames of families living in Nash County from 1777 to 1820 as their names appear in the petitions, tax lists, census, county court and deeds of property for the county. Now that this project is completed, we should add those surnames that appear, especially in land transactions, at physical locations that, after 1777, become Nash County. As most of you know, this is a huge project and everyone’s help is necessary to make this recording as accurate and comprehensive as is humanly possible.
On the information provided from the 1782 Tax List, readers will find, in brackets, three numbers posted for each person, in consecutive order. The numbers are in the following sequence: [1] the number of acres owned; [2] the number of slaves owned; and [3] the value of all real and personal property owned expressed in pounds, not dollars. Not listed are the number of mules, horses and cattle or the distribution of neighbors in a geographic assessment area. If you wish that information please email me.
The surnames posted here are hostage of the understanding and recording by numerous census takers and record keepers over time. For example, one census taker recorded “Boddie” as “Boddy” because that is what he was told and it is the correct pronunciation coupled with the wrong spelling. So, please check the information on your families and send to me corrections as well as additions.
