47th NORTH CAROLINA INFANTRY, COMPANY B

Company raised in Franklin County, NC and enlisted in the county in February and March, 1862.  It was mustered in at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, 11 April 1862.  Only a few Nash County men who were born or resided in the county fought in this largely Franklin County company.  They are listed below:

ENLISTED: born Nash, resided in Franklin, farmer who enlisted on 4 March 1862;  AGE:  25;  WOUNDED: in the left leg at Gettysburg, leg amputated, hospitalized at Getysburg, transferred to hospital at Davids Island, New York Harbor on or about 17 July 1863;  CAPTURED:  Gettysburg on or about 4 July 1863  PRISONER EXCHANGE:  paroled at Davids Islandon 22 Oct 1863, received at City Point, VA on 28 Oct 1863; retired to the Invalid Corps on 1 Aug 1864

BRYANT, BERRY, Private

ENLISTED: resided in Nash , enlisted on 5 March 1863;  AGE: 18;  CAPTURED: at or near Burgess’ Mill, VA on 27 Oct 1864  PRISON: Point Lookout Prison, MD on 31 Oct 1864;  PAROLED:  Point Lookout on 28 March 1865, received at Boulware’s Wharf, James River, VA on 30 March 1865; no further record.

ENLISTED: resided in Nash, enlisted in Franklin on 21 April 1862;  AGE: 18;  WOUNDED: at Gettysburg on or about 3 July 1863;  CAPTURED: at Gettysburg on or about July 4 – 5, 1863;  PRISON: at Ft. Delaware Prison, DE on or about10 July 1863, transferred to Point Lookout Prison, MD on or abou 15 Oct 1863;0  PRISONER EXCHANGE:  paroled at Point Lookout on or about 1 Nov 1864, received at Venus Point, Savannah River, GA on 15 Nov 1864; paroled at Raleigh, NC on 15 May 1865.

ENLISTED: farmer born in Nash County, resided in Franklin on 26 Feb 1862;  DIED:  16 May 1862, place and cause not reported [probably died of disease.

LEWIS, WILLIAM T., Private

ENLISTED: farmer born in Nash, resided in Franklin enlisting on 26 Feb 1862.   AGE: 23;  DIED:  at Goldsboro, NC on 1 June 1862, cause of death not reported [probably from disease,  (EDS. NOTE: most of these deaths, within the first year of enlistment, were the inevitable outcome of rural people, accustomed to living in low population density places, living in crowded camps where communicable diseases could easily spread).

MEACON, WILLIAM H., Private

ENLISTED: resided in Nash County, enlisted in Franklin on 21 April 1862;  AGE: 17;  WOUNDED:  in the left thigh and in the left side of his chest at Gettysburg on or about 2 July 1863, returned to duty prior to 1 Sept 1863;  CAPTURED:  at or near Ft. Stedman, VA on 25 March 1865;  PRISON: at Camp Lookout Prison, MD until his release on 6 June 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America.

PERRY, LINDSEY, Private

ENLISTED: resided in Nash County, enlisted in Franklin on 4 May 1862:  AGE: 35;   CAPTURED: at or near Fayetteville, PA on 5 July 1863 (two days after the major fight at Gettysburg);  PRISON:  to Baltimore, MD, (probably Ft. McHenry Prison), confined at Point Lookout Prison, MD on 17 Aug 1863;

PRISONER EXCHANGE:  paroled at Point Lookout on 3 March 1864, received at City Point, VA on 6 March 1864; returned to duty in May – June 1864; KILLED; at Burgess’ Mill, VA on 27 Oct 1864.

STRICKLAND, JAMES REDDIN, Private

ENLISTED: farmer born in Nash County, resided in Franklin prior to enlisting on 2 March 1863;  AGE: 33;  PRESENT:  in July – Aug 1863,  Jan-June, 1864 and Sept – Oct 1864;  PAROLED;  at Raleigh, NC on 22 May 1865.

STRICKLAND, JOSEPH, Private

ENLISTED: resided in Nash County, enlisted in Franklin on 15 March 1862;  AGE: 18;  DIED:  on 20 June 1862, place and cause not reported.

WHITFIELD, WILLIS, Private

ENLISTED:  farmer born in Nash County, resided in Franklin where he enlisted on 13 March 1862, as a substitute for another man;  AGE:  51;  PRESENT:  in July – Aug, 1863 & Jan – Feb 1864;  DISCHARGED:  on or about 9 April 1864, by reason of “dropsy.”

WILLIAMS, JOHN, Private

ENLISTED: resided in Nash County, enlisted in Franklin, date not reported, probably subsequent to 31 Oct 1864;  HOSPITALIZED:  at Richmond, VA on 12 March 1865 with debilitas;  CAPTURED: at Richmond hospital on 3 April 1865, transferred to Newport News, VA on 23 April 1865, released at Newport News, VA on 30 June 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America.
