PROCTOR, GRANDBURY, Private [His name was GRANDBERRY PROCTOR, brother of HANSEL HARRISON PROCTOR, JR., 2nd NC Cavalry and great uncle of Earl P. Bell, Jr.]

ENLISTED:  born in Nash, farmer who enlisted in Nash at the age of 30 on 24 Feb 1862:  PRESENT:  Jul – Aug 1863 and Jan – April 1864.  CAPTURED:  at or near Burgess’s Mill, VA, another source says near Petersburg, on 17 Oct 1864.  PRISON:  Point Lookout Prison, MD on 31 Oct 1864.  DIED:  at Point Lookout Prison on 9 Feb 1865 of “chronic diarrhoea.”  An additional source states that his remains were buried at the Point Lookout Cemetery but later moved.  He died two months before rifles were stacked at Appomattox Court House, VA.

OTHER INFORMATION: Grandberry Proctor married Elizabeth Vaughn (b. July, 1834) on 22 Sept 1853 in Edgecombe Co., NC.  He is 21 and she is 19 at the time of their marriage.  HIS FATHER AND MOTHER:  Hansel Harrison “Harry” Proctor, Sr. (b.  1793) and Sally Boon Proctor (b. 1785) lived in Edgecombe County, NC (1850).  In the Census of 1860 for Winstead’s District, Nash County, NC he is listed as a 29 years old Farm Laborer, who can not read or write, with a personal estate worth $100.  He, and his wife Elizabeth, who can not read or write, have two children William Jane (f) age 5 and Louisa (f) age 2.  They are living with to her father and mother Jason (b. 1810) and Sally (b. 1815) Vaughan.  AFTER GRANDBERRY PROCTOR’S DEATH AT POINT LOOKOUT PRISON IN MARYLAND:  in the Census of 1870 for Middleton Township (in an area that becomes Coopers Twp.), Nash County, NC, Elizabeth Vaughn Proctor is living as a widow, identified as the head of household, with three children:  William Jane (f) (who eventually marries Wiley Parker) age 14, Louisa (f) age 11 (she would eventually marry James T. Vaughn) and William (m) age 9.  In terms of real estate or personal estate, she possesses no declarable income.  In the Census of 1880, for Coopers Twp., in Nash County, Elizabeth Vaughn Proctor lived with her daughter Jane and son-in-law Wiley Parker.  No one in the household can read or write except Wiley Parker who can read but not write. Her son William Proctor is living with his Uncle John Hodge Vaughan in a household that contains his grandparents Jason and Sallie Vaughn, Aunt Mary A. and cousin John W. Vaughn.  In the Census of 1900, she is living with her daughter Louisa and her husband James Vaughn and their family.  In 1902, Elizabeth Vaughn Proctor applied to the State of North Carolina for a Widow’s Pension for his service in the Civil War.  By 1910, Elizabeth, who is 76 years old, has lost three of her four children and is living in Franklin County with her only surviving child Louisa “Lou” Proctor Vaughan and her husband J. T. “Jim” Vaughan.  As of this date. he is working in a lumber yard and dies in 1914.  Her grandson Thomas “Tommy” D. Vaughan, who was living with the family in 1910,  worked in Durham in the tobacco market and dies in 1921.  Elizabeth and her daughter Lou or Louisa both died between 1910 and 1920.  Thus, it is clear from Census and Tax Records that Grandberry Proctor’s family struggled from job to job, household to household, without declarable income, living at a subsistence, barter level of existence without the capacity to read or write.  The devastating poverty that followed the Civil War in North Carolina in general as well as in Nash and Franklin counties in particular resulted in a persistent, continuous struggle for survival from 1865 to the mid-1910s for Grandberry Proctor’s wife Elizabeth and his children: Louisa (Lou); Jane and William Proctor.  The two people in the Vaughan and Proctor Families who seems, until his death in 1922, to have tried to help this family was John Hodge Vaughan and his wife Pitie Hinton Vaughan of Cooper’s Twp. In Nash County, NC.  Their graves are visible on the west side of Vaughan Chapel Road in a fenced in cemetery near their home place.
