*  19 Nov. 1744 at Enfield.  ARTHUR BELL records his mark: a crop & slit in the right ear and a half moon under and over in the left ear.  ARTHUR BELL records his Brand Vizt:

*  JOHN EDWARDS and JOHN LEMON are executors of the Last Will and Testament of JAMES BARNES, deceased.  They settled BARNES’s accounts and books, ordered to be recorded.

*  THOMAS EDWARDS of Rocky Swamp records his mark: a Swallow Fork & half moon under the right ear a Crop & two Slitts in the left ear.  Also, he records his Brand [a large E] on the near buttock.

EVANS

February Court, 1744

*  JACOB EVANS, proves 8 Whites.

*  ROBERT HARRIS having very much abused Captain JAMES SPEER, one of the member of this Court last night.  The Court thereon doth order that the said HARRIS give Security in the sum of 10 pounds Proclamation money for his good behavior for 12 months or that  he stand committed.  Mr. accordingly acknowledge himself indebted to Our Sovereign Lord, the King in the sum of 10 pounds Proclamation money. with PHILLIP HAWKINS and BENJAMIN EVANS as Surety.  Each in the sum of 15 pounds like money, acknowledge.

*  a Deed of Sale from BENJAMIN EVANS and MARY EVANS to JOHN MINGO.  MARY EVANS privately examined as the law directs and she freely and voluntarily acknowledgeD her desire to sell, deed is recorded.  [Mary Evans has a right of dower that she must forgive for the sale to be consumated]

*  HENRY EVANS, the son of BENJAMIN EVANS, deceased being of full age came into Court & of his own accord chose DAVID CRAWLEY as his Guardian, who the Court approved and ordered, CRAWLEY gave security in the sum of 30 pounds.  Possession of the Estate belonging to said Orphan and Inventory thereof on Oath to return to this Court at their next sitting.

*  HANNA EVANS, daughter of BENJAMIN EVANS, deceased, being of full age came into Court & of her own accord chose DAVID CRAWLEY as her guardian, who the Court approved and so ordered.

February Court, 1745

*  on motion by MR. HODGSON, Attorney of JOHN HALL, the late Sheriff make return of the {?} issued on judgment obtained by said HALL against BENJAMIN EVANS and it appearing that K. GYLES, on of the Deputys of the late Sheriff had recorded the debt and cost in said lawsuit.  It is ordered by the Court that SAMUEL WILLIAMS, Esquire, late Sheriff, do pay the same.

November Court, 1745

*  upon petition of sundry inhabitants praying a new road from JOHN LOTTS[?] MILL upon Tossneott [Swamp] to CAPTAIN WEST’S Ferry on Tarr River which is granted and ordered & that the following Jury or any twelve of them do lay off the said roads, clear and maintain the said road, with JOHN LOTT, Overseer including ABRAHAM EVANS, SAMUEL WILLIAMS and THOMAS BARNES.

*  upon motion of MARY EVANS, adminstix of   praying leave to sell so much of the Estate of said deceased as will discharge the debts due from said Estate, ordered the Sale to be on Tuesday, July 3, 1747.

GRIFFIN

May Court, 1746

*  read the  petition of sundry inhabitants on the south side of Swift Creek praying a new road be laid out from the bridge at MR. MAIRN’S plantation on Swift Creek to Peach Tree Creek and the following jury or any 12 of them do lay out the same including JOHN GRIFFIN, JR. and THOMAS WILLIAMS, and that all the inhabitants on the south side of Swift Creek out above COLONEL WHITEHEAD’S MILL patt. do open and work on and clear the said road.  ROBERT HOLLAND, Overseer.

*  upon petition of the outward inhabitants praying an order for a road to be laid beginning at the Road on the east side of Six Pound Creek and running from thence to JOHN MARTINS on Sandy Creek which is granted by the Court and ordered, the following jury is order to lay out the road including: RICHARD JONES, EDWARD JONES, Overseer, SUGAR JONES.

*  ordered that JOHN CHERRY, RICHARD JONES, SAMUEL DUKE, RICHARD HUCKERBY, ROBERT ASHLEY, JOHN SERAGASKY and WILLIAM TATUM who now work on the main road wherof WILLIAM KENDRICK is Overseer.  They are ordered to keep and maintain the main road whereof PHILN. HAWKINS is now overseer.

*  ordered that a new road be laid out from Conway Creek to the Tarr River near JOSEPH SIMMS and that the following Jury or any twelve of them do lay out the same as the law directs including EDWARD JONES and ROBERT DICKINSON.  JOSEPH SIMMS, Overseer from Tarr River to Sandy Creek.  DENNIS LINDSAY, Overseer from Sandy Creek to Great Fishing Creek and ABRAHAM GREEN, Overseer from Great Fishing Creek to Little Fishing Creek.

*  read the petition of the inhabitants of RAWLIN’S ferry to Tarr River and rejected, included in the group was JAMES JONES.

November Court, 1744/45

*  Court met according to adjourment.  Present were MR. HAYWOOD, MR. KEARNEY, MR. SPEIR & MR. WILLIAMS.

February Court, 1745

*  a Deed of Sale from SAMPSON WILLIAMS to SAMUEL WILLIAMS, proved by the oath of WILLIAM WILLIAMS, ordered to be recorded.

*  upon a motion made by MR. BARKER, Attorney of WILLIAM GREEN guardian in behalf of the orphans of JAMES BROGDON, deceased, that a division of said deceased’s estate be made between ROBERT PARKER who intermarried with the widow of the said JAMES BROGEN, deceased & the said orphans which is granted and ordered, that MR. WILLIAM PARSONS, MR. JNO ALSTON and MR. HAYWOOD or any three of them do divide the said estate on Oath and a Return thereof to make to this Court at the next sitting and that the order made at last February Court be reversed and that the Sheriff forthwith take into his Custody all the Negroes belonging to said estate and deliver them  into the hands of CAPTAIN SAMUEL WILLIAMS.

*  License granted to WILLIAM OQU. to keep an Ordinary [Bar] & Victualling house at his dwelling Plantation, he thereupon entered into bargain with CHARLES EVANS and NICHOLAS BYRANT, Securities.

* ELIZABETH EVANS, Guardian of the orphans of ABRAM EVANS, deceased, hath leave to bring in her accounts with said orphans the next succeeding Court which is granted.

*  a Deed of Sale from JONAS JOHNSON to CHARLES EVANS, acknowledge.

*  JOHN SHEPARD is appointed Constable in the Room of JOHN EVANS.

*  License granted to CHARLES EVANS to keep an Ordinary [bar] at his dwelling  house he accordingly entered into Bond with Peter Mitchell, Secretary, AQUILA SUGG, WM HAYWOOD and JAMES HOWELL.

*  ordered that JOHN RAWLS and JOHN DUNN, Overseers of the Road leading to and from the Bridge on Town Creek at ROBERT WRIGHT’S & build a bridge over the Creek, near the old Bridge, work on the Bridge on Town Creek to the fork of CHARLES EVANS’S Road.

October Court, 1766.

*  an Inventory of the Estate of ELIZABETH EVANS, deceased was exhibited by the Executors and ordered to be recorded.

*  ordered that WILLIAM HAYWOOD, SHERWOOD HAYWOOD and ELISHA BATTLE or any two of them divide the Estate of ELIZABETH EVANS according to ________.

*  JOHN EVANS is continued as Overseer of the Road.

*  Ordered that JOHN WOODARD, SAMUEL KENNADY and JOHN EVANS with the Companies under them build a Bridge over Sappony Creek at SAMUEL KENNADAYS and that JOHN WOODWARD be the Overseer thereof.

October Court, 1767.

*  ordered that AQUILA SUGG, Esqr., NOAH SUGG and CHARLES EVANS or any two of them be Commissioners for the repairing of the lower bridge on Town Creek and report thereof to the next Court.

January Court, 1768.

*  the Commissioners appointed to let the repairing of the lower bridge on Town Creek, report that they had let the same to CHARLES EVANS for 10 pounds Proclamation money.

May Court, 1768.

*  a Deed of Sale from CHARLES EVANS & Uxr. To JOHN CARTWRIGHT acknowledged.

*  ordered that the Sheriff pay CHARLES EVANS ten pounds for repairing the lower bridge on Town Creek and be allowed the same in the accounts.

*  RICHARD HORN, Overseer of the Road, for the foot of EVAN’S Road to the Persimon Branch.

February Court, 1771.

* HENRY HORN, JR. and ABRAHAM EVANS are appointed Searchers for the ensuing year from the falls of the Tar River to the mouth of Swift Creek on both sides of said River.

*  a Deed of Sale from BARWELL EVANS to JOHN PERMENTER, proved by JAMES PERMENTER.

*  a Deed of Sale from JACOB EVANS & Ux. To DEMPSEY SKINNER, proved by JOHN PERMENTER.

August Court, 1772.

*  ordered that ABRAHAM EVANS be Overseer of the Road from Falling Run to the Great Branch near GREGORY STALLION’S path and that the hands of JESSE HARE, SHERWOOD HAYWOOD and JOSIAH MURPHREE work under him.

*  ordered that DANIEL WOODARD be Overseer of the Road from the Great Branch near GREGORY STALLINGS to Swift Creek Bridge and all the hands who formerly worked under said WOODARD, except those ordered to work under ABRAHAM EVANS, together with the hands of ROBERT DIGGES and WILLIAM ELLINOR WORK on the same.

*  a Deed of Sale from DUNCAN LAMON to EDWARD BALLARD, proved by JOHN EVANS.

*  ABRAM EVANS is continued as Overseer of the road.

October Court, 1766.

*  THOMAS MONEYHAM is appointed Overseer of the Road in the Room of John Clark.

*  ordered that the following hands be a Jury to lay off a Road from out of the Road at CHRISTIAN ROWES on the Contentney, the nearest and most convenient way to the Bridge at JOSEPH WILLIAMSONS on said creek including THOMAS MONEYHAM.
