LDS FAMILY SEARCH WEBSITES FOR VARIOUS CENSUSES OF THE UNITED STATES, 1850 to 1920.
As family researchers use these indexes for the United States Censuses, 1850 through 1920, please note that they are in various states of completion. Thus, do not assume, if, in a census not fully listed, that an individual or individuals does not appear. Also, for novice researchers, frequently, if you can not find a person or family in a census, the handwriting of the census taker may be unreadable for the scanner or the record is damaged and needs to be read either directly on the microfilm or in the original. Also, as of January 2010, neither the Census of 1910 or 1930 is yet available on a LDS Family Search site. It is wise to use the indexes and double check your searches, especially if there seems to be a void, on either HeritageQuest and/or Ancestry at your local library.
One other technique for identifying the physical location of a family in the various censuses is to record twenty heads of households, whole families if you are highly motivated, on either side of your family. Historically, census takers walked down the road and street. Thus, when you find your family in a specific place, the families listed before and after their name, in the census, are usually neighbors. This information helps track the moves by your family within the county and identify people when their are visual difficulties in reading a census.
Good hunting!
