The Julius Rosenwald Fund

In the second decade of the twentieth century, Julius Rosenwald (1862-1932), president of Sears, Roebuck and Company and a Chicago philanthropist, learned of the inadequate provision of education in the rural South for African Americans.  Subsequently, from the late 1910s to the early 1930s, a fund that he established built over 5,300 schools from Maryland to Texas.  The fund’s approach was primarily to offer architectural plans and matching grants.  More information on these schools can be found at:

All of the following schools are for African Americans.  In other words, built with Rosenwald Fund monies with designs were influenced by standard Rosenwald school plans.
