[As of January, 2010; purchase of these abstracts is still possible on Amazon and ebay]

North Carolina history begins in the 1580s with the Lost Colony, the first English settlement in the new world. NC records, among the best in the country, date from the Carolina Charter of 1663. Fortunately for the genealogical researcher many NC records have been abstracted, indexed, and published by a variety of individuals from many different professions.

You are invited to browse our list below which contains some of the most helpful titles to be found anywhere if you are researching early county-wide or colony-wide North Carolina ancestors.

**********************************

How do you find a very early North Carolina family? Where do you begin if you have only a surname and you do not know when the ancestor arrived in NC or where he/she first settled? BEGIN AT THE BEGINNING with LAND PATENS AND LAND GRANTS

Margaret M. Hofmann has published in abstract form all extant land patents and land grants for NC’s Colonial Era which are recorded in NC. Province of North Carolina 1663-1729 represents the land patents issued in NC under the authority of the eight Lords Proprietors to whom Charles II had given the Carolinas in 1663. It was an expanse of land from the VA line on the north running south to east-west line about 20 miles above Cape Caneveral in present-day FL. And the Carolinas stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

[MH-105] Province of North Carolina 1663-1729 Abstracts of Land Patents a colony-wide volume of more than 3400 abstracts of land patents from the proprietary period made from records on file in the Secretary of State’s Land Grant Office in Raleigh dually indexed with more than 25,000 references to surnames and places, soft cover, 9×6 size, 384 pages, map. $32.00

For various reasons, in 1729, the Lords Proprietors sold their shares on the Carolinas to the King and NC became a Crown Colony. In Colony of North Carolina Volume 1 and Volume 2 Margaret M. Hofmann has abstracted land patents for more than 15,000 tracts of land granted to settlers in NC by the Crown in the 30 – some years NC was a Crown Colony.

[MH-106] Colony of North Carolina 1735-1764 Abstracts of Land Patents Volume One abstracts of more than 7000 land patents issued in the first 30 years NC was a crown colony – an invaluable colony-wide reference book, surname and place name index with thousands of references, hard cover, 6×9 size, jacket, 650 pages. $33.00

[MH-107] Colony of North Carolina 1765-1775 Abstracts of Land Patents Volume Two abstracts of more than 9000 land patents issued in the last 10 years that NC was a crown colony – book is dually indexed by surname and place name for a total of about 50,000 references soft cover, 6×9 size, 857 pages, now in two volumes. $42.00

John Lord Carteret, the Earl Granville would not sell his share of the Carolinas to the Crown. In 1744 a Special Grant was made to Granville giving him one eighth of the Carolinas. Beginning at the VA line on the north, the tract ran south into NC giving Granville a belt of land 60 – 65 miles deep which like the Carolinas stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific. In Volumes 1 – 3 described below Margaret M. Hofmann has abstracted Granville Grants recorded in the Secretary of State’s land grant books and conflated with extant loose papers from the Granville Proprietary. Volumes 4 and 5 were abstracted from miscellaneous papers which can be identified as belonging to the Granville District.

[[MH-102] The Granville District of North Carolina 1748-1763 Abstracts of Land Grants Volume One contains abstracts of land records of the Granville Proprietary grant book entries conflated with original papers from Anson, Bladen, Bertie, Beaufort, Currituck, Chowan, Cumberland, Dobbs, and Edgecombe counties. Separate surname and place index, excellent introductions by George Stevenson of NC State Archives, hard cover, jacket, 199 pages, 6×9 size $24.00

[MH-103] The Granville District of North Carolina 1748-1763 Abstracts of Land Grants Volume Two continues the abstracts of land records of the Granville Proprietary grant book entries conflated with original papers of Granville, Halifax, Hyde, Johnson, Northampton, Orange, and Tyrrell counties. Surname index and place index, hard cover, jacket, 415 pages, 6×9 size. $36.00

[MH-104] The Granville District of North Carolina 1748-1763 Abstracts of Land Grants Volume Three continues the abstracts of land records of the Granville Proprietary grant book entries conflated with original papers for Pasquotank, Perquimans, and Pitt counties. Rowan County deeds of the Granville Proprietary were abstracted from micro-film copies of the loose original Granville District Land Office records for that county found in the NC State Archives. Surname and place index, hard cover, jacket, 164 pages, 6×9 size. $28.00
