He was a hardy, bold and brave according to the stories told about youthful experiences in hunting, fishing, and growing cotton on a big plantation in Montgomery County in NC. He was the only son of a Scotch-Irish family, which became quite wealthy from farming the rich bottom land near Dumas' Ferry on the Peedee River in Montgomery County, but then his father had lost everything when Confederate money became worthless after the war ended. Grandfather might well have become bitter when on his return home from the war, he found his parents penniless and near death. Lucy, his only sister, had married Jim Rivers and was living with her husband near the little village of Mt. Crogan in S. C. Grandpa Thomas was obviously equal to the task of starting from scratch, for after a period of mourning following the deaths of both parents he settled the estate, what little was left of it, and moved on to the Waxhaw Creek settlement where other Robinson forebears had already put down roots, and it was there that he met and married Wincey Jane Tyson, beloved grandmother .
Grandpa Thomas outwitted and escaped from robbers on a horse-trading trip into the wilds of Tenn. soon after they were married. He seems that he'd become a horse trader before his marriage and had worked at it a long with farming for several years. Traveling alone on horseback, he made periodic trips through the thinly settled counties of Western NC and beyond. On one trip he found he passed a sparsely house before night fall which he thought he might find lodging for a fee. He spurred his horse on but as a got closer to the two-story, unpainted house three tough looking men came out to meet him. He asked them how far to find lodging. "Too far, said one. "Two dangerous too", said another. Robbers roam these woods at night, said the third. After a pause, he added, "I reckon maybe we could put you and your horse up for the night." The third fellow, having walked right up to Grandpa's horse reached for his bridle and starting leading him toward the barn. And before Grandpa could respond, an elderly woman came out of the house and said, "Pears like I'd better set another plate on the table. Grandpa knew by then that he was committed to be their GUEST, so he hopped off his horse, holding onto the knapsack containing the money which he'd brought along to pay for the horses he hoped to purchase and followed his hosts into the kitchen. He ate the plain supper as quietly and quickly as he politely could, then asked to be shown to his sleeping quarters. chair and a wash-stand. A large framed picture on one of the two out side walls covered a large hole, through which he dropped a pebble and heard a small plash which told him that something, perhaps a well, existed beneath the house. He next raised the shades on the window and saw the iron bars behind the glass which further confirmed his suspicions concerning their intentions. He propped the chair under the doorknob, placed his open jack-knife on the table, and stretched out on the bed. He lay there for about two hours wide awake and heard creaking sounds just outside of the door. When
they got closer he pushed the knife blade into its handle. It worked. It sounded like the click of a gun.
He stayed awake all night until he heard the men ride off early morning and tiptoed down stairs to leave when the older woman found him and insisted that he stay and eat. When she saw that he was intent on leaving she grabbed a horn hanging on the porch wall and blew three long blasts on it . Grandpa Thomas grabbed his saddle, got on his horse and left. He had only gone about a mile when he heard the hoof-clopping sounds again. He then outsmarted those rogues by bending low over his horse's neck, spurring him sharply and giving him free rein. Before the armistice was signed, however, Uncle Tom Robinson and Grandma Robinson had been obliged to return to Mineral Springs to face and deal with the death and burial of the second eldest of her six sons. His name was Albert and he was only a couple of years older than Con, but because his wife had predeceased him and left him with three children he seldom had time to visit. Neil, Kelly and Bessie would be living with Tom Robinson and his mother Wincy. Tom raised the three children in his home after Grandmother died.
