CHARLES E. MOORE Jr.
MOORESVILLE - Charles Edward “Charlie” Moore Jr., 61, died at home on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005.
He was born on April 9, 1943, in Maiden to the late Charles Moore Sr. and Ola M. Moore.
Mr. Moore served in the Army from 1963 to 1966. Part of his enlistment was spent in Germany in military intelligence. After returning, he started his professional career with NCNB. He joined Nationwide Insurance in 1972. After two years as sales manager, he became an agent serving the Mooresville community.
During his 28-year career, he earned all of Nationwide’s top accolades. Those include Rookie of the Year, top life insurance agent for the Southeast, Champion’s Conference and President’s Conference. His largest trophy best describes the philosophy he lived by as an agent, “No man will ever perform a better human service than to secure the family of his fellow man.”
That same philosophy was extended to his desire to support his community. He was recognized as Lion of the Year from the Mooresville Lions Club in 1982. He served as president in 1986-87 and as Tail Twister for several years. He was a volunteer with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for 10 years. He supported local law enforcement by purchasing portable Breathalyzer units and educational equipment used in the schools to discourage teen drinking and driving. Nationwide recognized him for his community involvement by presenting him with the District Service Award in 1991. He was a founding member of the Mooresville-South Iredell Crimestoppers. He later served as president and helped initiate the Law Enforcement Appreciation Banquet, which continues to be a large annual event. The town of Mooresville honored him with a proclamation on Sept. 30, 2004, to “express their appreciation for his outstanding service to the Crimestoppers Organization and to this community.”
During his leisure time, he enjoyed traveling, scuba diving, water skiing, racquetball, photography, chess, sports cars, billiards and entertaining at his lake home. His appreciation of nature was reflected in his love for photography.
His passion, though, was his love for his family. He is survived by his mother, Ola M. Moore; a son, Charles E. Moore III; fiancée, Debbie Tillis; a daughter-in-law, Gina; two granddaughters, Kensley and Amy; two sisters, Jean Withers of Denver, N.C., who also lost her husband, Mickey, on the same day, and Dotty Clowdus of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother-in-law, Jack Clowdus; and nephews, Jadey Clowdus and wife, Colene, and Mark Clowdus and wife, Sharon.
Also surviving is his beloved Dalmatian, Duke.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Cavin’s Funeral Home in Mooresville.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Charlie will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Mooresville, with the Revs. Bill Draughn and Mike A. Macdonald officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Road, Suite 200, Charlotte, N.C. 28210, or Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250.
The family would like to thank all those who assisted in making his final days more comfortable and affirming the fact that his life was filled with good friends, good times and love.
