The D.M. Carpenter House

______________________

Henry Franklin Carpenter and sons L.A. Carpenter and D.M. Carpenter were the chief founders of the town of Maiden. They bought prosperity to the Maiden section by founding and operating three textile plants and a flour mill. The D.M. Carpenter home (pictured above) was built in 1889 and remodeled to its pictured elegance in 1898. It was designed after a home in Charlottes's historic Fourth Ward. It had two staircases, one in the front and one in the back of the house, for safety in case of fire. The front staircase was wide and ornately handcarved in various designs. It is remembered as the only house in town with a steeple. On top was a deck where Mr. Carpenter would enjoy his telescope. Stained glass windows made the house beautifully Victorian. The L.A. Carpenter home was the second substantial home built in Maiden and the D.M. Carpenter home was the third. A portrait of L.A. Carpenter is in the Catawba County Museum of History. The only thing left of this beautiful home is the rock foundation
and rock columns that supported the porch.
