Edgecombe Co., NC, and died Abt. 1824 in Burke Co., NC. He married unknown.

1800 Johnson Co., NC Federal Census- Lists Aquila Mace with 3 sons, between 0 - 10 years of age.
Aquila is listed as between the ages of 26 & 45 and wife listed as between the ages of 26 & 45. Census

1820 Burke Co., N.C. Census - lists Aquilla Mace with 2 boys under the age of ten and it is believed that
David and John are these two unnamed sons. ( Ref. - Burke Co. Heritage Book, Entry # 443, written by
Mrs. Marlene Simmons Campbell ) There is also 1 female listed in this census, between the ages of 16 &
26. Microfilm roll #69.
"It has been said that John grew up near Asheville and was bound out to a minister. David, reared by
someone else, is rumored to have run away and joined a circus, while John stayed until his bondship was
fulfilled." ( Ref. Burke Co., Heritage Book, Entry # 443 )
This is also the story that my grandfather, Arthur Mace, always told us about his grandfather, David
Mace.
According to the 1820 Census, Aquilla was a neighbor of the Conrad Rader household. John and David
were living in the Rader Settlement when listed as orphans, Oct. 1824 court session.
According to court records, John and David were bound out to John Whitesides, who also lived in the
Rader settlement.

David Mace and brother, John, are listed in the Burke County, NC Court Minutes of Oct., 1824 as
orphans, living in the Rader Settlement. In the Jan., 1825 Session: " Orphans - David Mace and John
Mace, two orphan children be bound into John Whitesides while they arrive to full age. John, now being
six years old. David being 8 years old." David was 4 years older than John, so the ages at time should
have been John 6 years and David 10 years.

proof enough for the War Department; his pension was granted."

According to the Burke County Heritage book, entry # 446, "Five days prior to her death at the age of
69, she was summond to deliver a baby up on Henry River. Following delivery, she walked home in the
heat of a hot June day. It is thought that water she drank on the way home caused typhoid or dysentery
from whichshe died. William Henry and Margaret are buried at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he
gave land for the original cemetery.

Anna O. Mace
Morganton - Anna Lena Ollis Mace, 88 of the Enola community, died Oct. 25, 2002, at Grace Hospital.
Born March 18, 1914, in Avery Co., she was a daughter of the late Stancil D. and Addie Franklin Ollis.
A member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, she retired from Broughton Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Mace; a son, Gilbert Mace; four brothers, Billy Ollis,
Allen Ollis, Stancil D. Ollis, Jr. and James C. Ollis; and two sisters, Georgia Heath and Margaret Ramsey.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Kathy Mace of Morganton and John and
Ursula Mace of Kaiserlautern, Germany; a brother, Rey D. Ollis of Nebo; two sisters, Ann Denton of
Morganton and Dorothy Cook of Boone; three grandchildren, Patty Davis, Nancy Warden and Tony
Mace; three great-grandchildren Clara Burleson, Tiffany Davis, Alexander Warden; two great-great-grandchildren, Ciara Burleson and Katlin Burleson; and a number of other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be conducted by Larry Cline at 2p.m. Thursday at her church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Sossoman Funeral Home, 1011 S. Sterling St. Morganton, from 7 to 9 tonight.
