Capt. Gardner Harwell’s District, 1804

 Robert C. Carpenter, Contributor

Kathy Gunter Sullivan, Transcriber, 2010

Robert C. Carpenter:

Harwell’s Company is located near Sherrills Ford; part of the company area now is under Lake Norman. I suspect Harwell’s Company included parts of first and tenth companies in the 1790 Lincoln County census.

The residents are predominately English speaking people including Rev. Asbury, the famous Methodist preacher. Linebargers, Kinder, Turbyfill, and Holdsclaw are a few probable Germans in the company. It appears to be a prosperous region since there were two cotton gins which were taxed. This is before King Cotton became the predominate crop in the south. There was significant ownership of slaves, with black polls being only eleven less than the number of white polls. The relatively high number of black polls suggests a region involved in cash crops and industry.

Kathy Gunter Sullivan:

At April Sessions 1805, Justice of the Peace John Turbyfill was appointed to receive the taxpayers’ information in Harwell’s Company. In 1791, Turbyfill purchased land on the west side of the Catawba River neighboring Francis Cunningham, Reubin Simpson, the Beaverdam Branch [of Mountain Creek], John Hawkins, and Adam Perkins; see Lincoln County deed book 16: 230. This land is in present-day Mountain Creek Township of Catawba County. By 1806, the company captain was James Wilkinson; see Wilkinson’s 1806 Tax List.

In 1792, John Turbyfill was a trustee of a Methodist Episcopal Church on the head of Grassy Creek. The other trustees were Daniel Asbury, Samuel Harwell, William Mays, Harbert Harwell, John Edwards, and Rawley Harwell; Lincoln County deed book 32: 257. This may be present-day Bethel United Methodist Church across the existing county line in Denver, Catawba Springs Township, Lincoln County.
