Captain Carpenter’s Company, 1805

Robert C. Carpenter:

Residents in this company were predominately of German descent. I have identified 50 of the 87 names as being of German descent. Many were descendants of early immigrants into America and into North Carolina. Family ties bound many of these residents. Most of the inhabitants of the company were farmers and held few slaves. The company’s two cotton gins were owned by John Oats and Adam Kiser. Two cotton gins suggest the production of cotton. Most farms appear to be of the small farm variety with production of subsistence crops plus some production for sale.

Carpenter's Company is in present southern central Lincoln County and present northern central Gaston County. It included about half of the sixth company in the 1790 Lincoln County census. A geographic description of the tax list company would be thusly: the company is south of the South Fork River; its boundary runs from approximately High Shoals south along the South Fork River to a line with Pasour Mountain. That line runs southwest toward present Bessemer City; the line runs along Long Creek westward toward the present Cleveland County line; at a point near the present Gaston-Cleveland County line the boundary runs north to include present day Cherryville; the boundary then ran east from approximately Mt. Zion Church south of Indian Creek until halfway between present Cherryville and Crouse; at that point the company boundary drifts north of Indian Creek and then runs into the South Fork River near present-day Laboratory.

The tax district basically was south of Indian Creek, west of the South Fork and northwest of Pasour Mountain, north of Long Creek, and west of a ridge running approximately along the current Cleveland and Gaston county line. The portion of the tax list in Gaston County was in present Cherryville Township.
