Slave Names Mentioned in Jones County Wills

Thanks to the work of a volunteer contributor, we now have on the site a list of slave names mentioned in Jones County wills from 1778-1868.   The wills were abstracted by Zae Hargett Gwynn and published in 1998 in what is now a very important reference work for Jones County researchers.

The list has been added to our African-American Resources page and you can view it directly here.

  1. Looking for any information on Daniel Webster Pugh. He was born 16 Jan 1912 in Mayesville (Jones) NC. Died in NY. He lived on 95 Miller St. This is based on his 1940 WW II Young Men’s Draft Registration Card.

    Thank you for your help.

  2. Hi Gina,

No, I don’t have a corresponding list for Craven County. This list here was extracted from a published book but I can start looking around for published books of Craven County that we may be able to extract slave names from. Is there someone in particular you are looking for?

  3. Hi Ron – thanks for the comment. What type of information are you specifically looking for? I have found his record in the Social Security Death Index and it states he died 28 Dec 1988.
