WIDOW’S APPLICATION FOR PENSION

STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

County of Jones

On this 27th day of July, A. D., 1896, personally appeared before me S. E. Koonce, C.S.C. in and for the State and county aforesaid, Mrs. C. E. Chase, age 55 years, and a resident at Comfort post office, in said county and State, and who, being duly sworn, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension under the provisions of an act entitled, “An act for the relief of certain soldiers of the late war between the States,” ratified March 11, 1889; as amended by acts of General Assembly of 1891, 1893 and 1895; that she is the widow of the late Wm. H Chase, who enlisted in the Co B, 51st Reg. N.C. State Troops on or about the 21st day of March, 1862, to serve in the armies of the late Confederate States, and that while in performance of duty in said Company and Regiment, in the State of ______, on or about the ____day of ________ 186_, he received a wound or wounds or injuries which terminated his life.

(Applicant will here state very particularly when and where the husband died; whether he was in the discharge of his duty as a soldier or sailor at the time of the receipt of the wound or injury or contracting of the disease; whether the death was the probable consequence of such service and all other circumstances necessary to establish the fact of service and death of husband, etc. )

W.H. Chase husband died November 6th, 1895.  She further states that she has never re-married; that she is, and has been for twelve months immediately preceding this Application for Pension, a bona fide resident of North Carolina; that she holds no office under the United States, or under any State or county, from which she is receiving the sum of three hundred dollars as fees or as salary annually; that she is not worth in her own right, or the right of her late husband, property at its assessed value for taxation to the amount of five hundred dollars ($500), nor has she disposed of property of such value by gift or voluntary conveyance since the 11th of March, 1885.

Also personally appeared before me Margaret McGee, who resides at Comfort post office and A. B. Chase who resides at Comfort Post office, in said county and State, persons whom I know to be respectable and entitled to credit, and being by me duly sworn, say that they are acquainted with C. E. Chase, the widow of the late W. H. Chase, of Co B, 51 Regiment North Carolina State Troops, and that they believe her to be the identical person she represents herself to be, and that the facts set forth in her affidavit are correct to the best of their knowledge and belief, and that they have no interest, direct or indirect, in this claim.
