Lemuel Cartwright
April 12,1838 - August Term 1839
Will Book 6; pgs. 53-54

In the name of God Amen, I Lemuel Cartwright of the county of Hyde being of sound and perfect mind and memory blessed by God do this day (day not mentioned in transcription) of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight make and publish this my last will & testament in manner following - that is to say.

First I give and bequeath one hundred & six acres of land adjoining the Burding land unto my son Robert Cartwright also two cows and yearlings and my hand mill and my cart and one large pot and one hand iron and my grind stone.

I also give and bequeath unto Albert Car(t)wright one hundred acres of land it being the land on whare (sic) I now live also give Albert my best feather bed and furniture and one cow & calf and one cross cut saw and plow.  I give my big Bible to Albert Cartwright and my large chest and 3 silver tea spoons and large judg (?) one fat jar also my pot iron.

I also give and bequeath unto Hopy Cartwright one feather bed and furniture and 3 silver teaspoons and one cow, one pewter basin and one tin pan. 

I also give unto Catharine Cartwright one cow and calf which I now milk one fat pan.  I also give unto Hopy Cartwright one loom.

Also bequeath unto my granddaughter Anna Sadler ten dollars to be paid by executors and all my furniture that is on my shelfs and in my milk house to be equally divided between Albert & Catherine his brother.  (NOTE:  the ...”Catherine his brother” is evidently a mistake, since Albert’s brother is Robert Cartwright.)

Also give to Hopy my flat irons.

I hereby make my sons Robert & Albert Cartwright my executors of this my last will and testament.  In witness whereof I the said Lemuel Cartwright set my hand an(d) seal this April 12th 1838.

Hyde County SS August Term 1839, then was this last will and testament of Lemuel Cartwright, decd., exhibited in open court & duly proven by John A. Davis a subscribing witness thereto ordered by the court that it be enrolled.
