Adeline Brooks Payne
(April 10, 1854 - November 28, 1945)

Adeline Brooks was the daughter of Samuel Sheldon Brooks and Penelope Swindell. She was born in the White Plains community of Hyde Co. and died at Gull Rock. She is buried in the Brooks-Midyett Cemetery. She married Millard Filmore Payne (Jan. 10, 1850 - April 27, 1930) on December 6, 1871 and to them were born the following children:

The top picture shows Mrs. M.F. Payne of Gulrock, N.C. with a beautiful birthday cake bearing 85 candles in celebration of her birthday on April 10th. The party which is an annual affair was held on April 9th. Mrs. Payne has a large circle of friends and is noted for her sweet disposition and cheerful nature. Her birthday party was held at the home and the dinner was served on the lawn, as the day was fair and the air turned balmy. There were about 200 people present, of whom over 150 signed their names on the visitors register, among whom were the elder sister, Mrs. Almeta Jones of Swan Quarter (age 80 and in good health), her seven children: Mrs. Annie White of Belhaven, Mrs. Lizzie Credle and Mr. Ronald Payne of Swan Quarter, Mr. Warren Payne, Mrs. Amanda Pugh and Mrs. Addie Gibbs, all of Gulrock, and Mrs. Mary Cason of Lenoir, with their families consisting of 29 grandchildren besides her great-grandchildren and also her adopted son, Mr. Hill Midyette and family. Her many friends and relatives joined in wishing her a very happy coming year.
