Richard Thomas Berry
(September 16, 1832 - November 6, 1875)

Richard Thomas Berry was born in Hyde County on September 16, 1832. He moved to New Bern and became involved in politics and was elected some time after the Civil War ended as New Bern's youngest mayor. He married Mary Francis White, daughter of Mary Cassandra and Whichcote White of Craven County. Richard Thomas Berry was commissioned as a Captain on January 20, 1862 in the Athens Guard, a militia unit in New Bern. His grave site has one of the Athens Guard markers at the foot of his casket. He died of consumption (tuberculosis) at age 43 while still serving as New Bern's mayor. He and his wife had three children to survive to adulthood: Florence Elizabeth (my grandmother), Edward Thomas, and Mary Cassandra Berry.

If any family member in Hyde County or elsewhere who sees this photograph knows anything about Richard Thomas Berry's family line, would you please share your family history with me? I think I have two earlier generations but would like to know more of this family and his lineage. Thank you for your responses.
