The Hyde Co. Historical and Genealogical Society held its spring meeting on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church with about 125 people attending.  Mike Adams, Deacon, welcomed all to the church, which was established in 1919.  Isabelle Homes, president of HCHGS, then introduced the guest speaker, Ruth Azalea Selby Mackey, whose lead article in the Society’s spring journal, High Tides, traces the roots of the Mackey family of Hyde County.  Ms. Mackey focused her remarks on how she carefully pieced together snippets of information and reconstructed her family’s history.  Present at the meeting were many family members including the family’s oldest living member, James Andrew Mackey, Jr., and the year old youngest, Allyson Staton.

Highlighting the presentation were two selections sung by family member, Tshombe Selby of Dare County, an accomplished vocalist who has performed as a choir member in the Lost Colony production.

Following the meeting and a reception hosted by church members, the nearby and recently restored Mackey Estate home place was open for visiting with family members there to point out the architectural details of the circa 1904 home.  Family Bibles, land deeds, and treasured photographs were also on view.

HCHGS members, friends and Mackey family members had traveled from as far as Maryland, Missouri, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and from across North Carolina to be present for this informative presentation.

The purpose of the HCHGS is to preserve and record the history of Hyde County, NC, and its people.  To that end, the group publishes a journal, High Tides, twice a year and meets in the spring and fall.  The Society’s library containing publications available for research is located in the Mattamuskeet Library; the Society also has publications, other than its journal, available for sale.    New members are always welcome. For more information, go to the HCHGS website at  www.ncgenweb.us/hyde/HYDE.HTM  or write to PO Box 517, Engelhard, NC   27824.
