HYDE COUNTY
Area: 430 Square Miles
Population: 7,765 White: 4,422; Colored: 3,343

Hyde County was one of the original precincts of North Carolina, and
    existed previous to 1729, when the Lords Proprietors (except Lord
    Granville) surrendered their rights to the Crown. It was called in
    honor of Edward Hyde, who was Governor of the Colony. His
    commission is dated January 24, 1711.
    Swan Quarter, the county-seat, is situated at the head of Swan
    Quarter Bay, 160 miles east of Raleigh, and has a population of l39.
    Surface - Level and in places swampy; soil very rich, especially
    around Lake Matamuskeet.
    Staples - Corn, cotton, wheat, sweet potatoes and fish.
    Fruits - Apples, peaches, pears, grapes, plums and other small
    fruits. The celebrated Matamuskeet apple grows to perfection
    around the lake, from which it derives its name.
    Timbers - Cypress, gum, maple, holly, juniper, pine, cedar and oak.
